I have a simple solution.
They can change their name to the University of Lafayette.
They can use UL with no issue

Plus there is no way they would be allowed to be named a flagship university in Louisiana, there is only one and will always be only one. As it probably should be.

When you can pay for your sports program without using Louisiana taxpayers funding, you can be Louisiana. Until then you are UL-Lafayette, as is constitutionally required in Louisiana.

I doubt the University of Louisiana system could hand out that designation to any school without igniting a crapstorm even if they were inclined to do so. Louisiana is just too political a state.

They could if they offered enough programs to reach the designation.
That does come down to some government decisions, but regardless, it’s dumb that the Lafayette campus is hell bent on being recognized as the flagship of the system without actually trying to get the designation. And not just from an athletic standpoint either, in the 80’s they tried to sneak “University of Louisiana” on their diplomas and the government laughed at them and made them reissue them all.

I'm was born and raised in Lafayette, graduated from both schools, and never liked the ULL name. I miss the USL acronym and wish they would have gone with the Univ. of South Louisiana. ULM could have gone with North Louisiana University. Do you like ULL, it's just doesn't fit for me ?
