Willie Sims must have been hurt because I didn't see him sub in after Hi-C got elbowed in the face by Mark Aguirre.

Man, they did have terrible calls in this game. Just saw 3 times down the court, LSU gets inside position on an offensive board and gets called for a foul putting DePaul on the line.

Macklin got hurt at the beginning of the game.

I think Terry Cummings slid his foot under Macklin as he was up in the air, causing the sprain. It looks like he tried to do the same thing to Scales later in the game when he went up for a dunk. Scales saw it and didn't injure his ankle but it altered Scales' shot causing him to miss the dunk. I think Cummings did it on purpose both times.

I don't understand why Brown played Mattick at center so much in that game rather than Cook. Cook had a decent shot from the elbow and was quicker and more active inside than Mattick.

yeah, I always thought Brown played Mattick way too much, never understood it. Cook was not much of an offense threat either but he was much better defensively and could board better.

Mattick was a waste, even when grading on the curve of “big guy who just needs to get in the way and give some fouls.”

By the end of his freshman year Mattick had become a very serviceable player. Too bad he got hurt and never even got back to that level again.

I would say the term serviceable could be perceived differently from one person to another.

He was a salesman from day 1. The dude knew how to promote the LSU brand. Georgetown, UNLV, Texas, Duke, Loyola Marymount, Arizona...even games at the Superdome.

1977 - 1981 were great, great years. Young ones today can't imagine how big LSU basketball was. We were the rock stars of the SEC. And Dale led the band, great times.

It continued on through CJ and Shaq. The Randy Livingston injury is the day the music died for Dale and LSU.

Man, Scales was talented and athletic. Next time someone asks for an all-time complete (15 man) roster for LSU he makes it on mine. I'd take him over Big Baby, Swift, Bass, Lloreda, N. Wilson, and several other power forwards. It'd be a tough call to choose between him and John Williams.

He wouldn't be a starter but he'd be in the second 5.

Al Maguire was more of a Depaul homer than Verne was with Bama football.

I love these topics and posts. Thank you for sharing. I found a UNC/LSU tournament game here a few weeks ago from 82 with Michael Jordan. Never knew they played in the tourney.
Crappy but watchable

BTW-That DePaul team was STACKED.
