I know LSU is a preseason top 25 team. Could y'all tell me why this year's team is better than last year team and who are the starters?

this team isn't better than last years team yet because it hasn't played yet.

sick recruiting class has infused much needed hype into the program

no starter lineup is set

bank on Simmons and Quarterman being starters. after that?? Blakeny vs. Hornsby? I think Hornsby gets the early season nod. It will be interesting. stay tuned......

We are set for 1's, 2's, and 3's (by position). Our problem is gonna be inside defense and rebounding and, to a lesser degree, scoring inside.

This team will be better because we now have Ben Simmons, that alone makes us better. Add in Blakeney and another year of experience for Quarterman and Hornsby and this team has the ability to be a top 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

I predict the starting 5 will be:

Quarterman
Hornsby
Blakeney/Gray
Simmons
Robinson

TBD on if they are better than last year's group. Reasons why they should be? Simmons is a more skilled version of Martin and potentially the best player in college basketball.
Blakeney is a big time scorer. TQ has played himself into a potential NBA pick and is now in his 3rd year. Hornsby returns, Gray returns, Patterson returns. Sampson is going to be a very good player.

Why they won't be as good?

There is no more rim protector and rebounding machine in Mickey. They are going to be reliant on Freshman and other inexperienced players on defense. There are concerns in the post both offensively and defensively. Simmons is great, but he's better on the perimeter. Victor is out the first few games and we still can't say for sure how good he is. Their going to be more reliant on Robinson and/or Malone than they have over the last 2 years. Neither guy has looked like a SEC player to this point.

Initial Starting 5

Quarterman
Blakeney
Hornsby
Simmons
Malone and/or Robinson

Once Victor is eligible

Quarterman
Blakeney
Hornsby
Simmons
Victor

does it really matter who the starting five may be? as a successful h.s. basketball coach for many years, I always had a "starting 8"... you begin the game with 5 starters, but how many games have you seen that these 5 play an entire game... there should always be 8-10 players ready to go and play in a game; the mental aspect is a big factor during the course of a game, and is often overlooked

Uhh they both start?

Quarterman
Hornsby
Blakeney
Simmons
whoever until Victor.

That starting 4 alone is very, very good.

Backup guards are still very good too.

No? And he asked what we thought the starting 5 would be so I gave him my prediction.

Obviously Victor, Gray, Blakeney, Patterson and Sampson are going to contribute a lot of minutes as well.

we can and most likely will play 3 guards because TQ has the size to guard most 3's on defense.

I think the lack of an inside presence won't be near as big a factor as some are making it out to be. It may hurt us if we make a deep tournament run, but you can win a lot of basketball games with good guards.

Obviously you want both, but most college coaches would take good guards over good bigs.

I think the college game in general lacks inside presence, so I do not think this will hurt us.

I think once Victor returns coupled with Simmons, that will be all we need.

And we've got A LOT of good guards.

Also TQ is 6'6" so we have length at the PG position which is invaluable, especially for guard heavy teams.

I just hope we improve free throw shooting across the board. With this guard heavy lineup, there is no reason we shouldn't be near the top of the conference.

This is my thought as well.

The way the game is now that having a good post game is more of a luxury now than a necessity to win a lot of games. There really aren't many college teams that have great post play anymore. Once Victor is healthy and if Robinson can be a good surprise for us, I think our post play will be more than enough to make a competetive run.

I see your point (Kemba Walker type players), but more times than not, coaches would rather a big man. See last year's championship. Duke and Wisconsin had 2 of the top 3 big men in college basketball.
