BATON ROUGE – After starting off the first two weeks with a 10-0 record at home, the seventh-ranked LSU softball team will be hitting the road for the first time in 2018, heading to California for six games in four days.

The Tigers will compete in the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton, California Thursday and Friday, taking on San Josè State, tournament host Pacific and Nevada. Following the Libby Matson, the Tigers will head to Palm Springs for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic to face Fresno State, No. 3 UCLA and No. 5 Oregon.

Series Record Against…

San Josè State: First Meeting
Pacific: LSU leads 2-1
Nevada: First Meeting
Fresno State: LSU leads 2-1
UCLA: UCLA leads 7-3
Oregon: Oregon leads 2-1

UCLA, who the Tigers defeated in game one of the Women’s College World Series in 2017, comes into the weekend with a 10-0 record.

Oregon, another opponent that LSU faced in the Women’s College World Series in 2017, goes into the weekend with a 9-1 record. Oregon suffered its first loss of the season to SEC foe No. 15 Ole Miss on Saturday, 1-0 in nine innings.

I remember the UCLA coach being very pissed over the calls in the WCWS last year. LSU won 2-1 and I think the UCLA coach or one of the assistants was kicked out of the game and maybe the rest of the tournament for their actions.

I love the softball girls, but trips like these are what cause the program to lose massive amounts of money. At least 50k for this trip, probably more.

Almost all major programs travel at least once during a player's career to play near their hometown. This year we play near Allie Walljasper's hometown. It's part of getting the best recruits.

The tournament in Palm Springs is probably the best gathering of top teams in the country. Teams now beg to get in that tournament and it's a softball junkies dream. Top 25 games on 5 fields at the same time and good weather is well worth the trip.

I would be there but I have my own tournament to coach in.

Trips like these also puts LSU's name on the map nationally as well and assists in recruiting. LSU recruits heavy in California so these trips are always important. Mary Nutter is a prestigious tournament too

Plus most teams usually travel back to a players home town to play in front of family and friends

The team? They play two games tomorrow, I didn't really think about it but just assumed they would be out there already.

Annoying AF DJ Sanders transferred to Oregon instead of LSU. She would have made LSU an easy top 5 team

I doubt Beth would move Serret away from SS and put Sanders tthere.

Sanders wasn't allowed to transfer to any school in the state of Louisiana. I wished LSU could have picked up Alissa Dalton, she is a very talented player. She seems to have matured and had no issues so far at ULL

If Sanders were at LSU, she would play at 2B

It's formatted better but it's still not that great. Auburn's twitter does play by play with every batter.

as ridiculous as this sounds to anybody that follows and understands big time softball, this is true. A 2017 first team all-american SS that transfers to Oregon and is starting at SS for the Ducks probably wouldn't be given the opportunity to start at SS for LSU. Reflect on that for a second.

This Cali trip should be quite a test for the team. We know we have the pitching now its time to see how the hitters respond against quality competition.

I am not disputing she isn't a phenomenal player but she is an all american for her bat. Kinda like Bianka Bell was here at LSU.

Amazing bats, made some nice defensive plays here and there but really aren't that special defensively

Sanders is a pretty versatile athlete, she could play multiple positions.

She's a worse fielder in her career and there was an opening at 2nd.

DJ is an amazing hitter. Few players (if any ever) are all American for their gloves alone. You always have the offensive side that separates players.

With that said, DJ also fielded about 20 points higher and made half the amount of errors of our returning SS. Our 2017 team had the worst defensive and offensive infield in the entire SEC.

I'm just hoping the infield can produce offensively this year to overcome some of the defensive struggles we have grown accustomed to.
