Which players were even worth retaining as starters. Did any play even reasonably well?

Alexander was above average

People dont want to admit it now that he hit the portal but Ryan was better at corner than nickel as well

We didnt have anything close to a high level corner though this year. I would go back and take JBC and Garner from the 2022 team easily.

IF we could land Richardson from MSU that would be your first elite corner.

Compared to what we had on the field after all the injuries? That doesn't say a whole lot. Dude cannot tackle.

No I said Ryan was a better player at corner than he was at nickel, that's all I said. HE struggled more at nickel than at corner after that move got made. He seemed more comfortable and made more plays at corner. He was decent enough there, but we do all have this perception he always sucked because he was a5-star and never did much of anything his first 2.5 years here. Just saying he was a solid player at corner, took him time to finally get there. He missed some tackles this season but in other aspects was much better once he moved to corner from nickel.

We can absolutely get better corners, but it's a matter of actually getting them. We have a ton of dead weight at corner right now.

We do? With Welch and Sage gone, it seems like everybody are either freshmen or incoming freshmen besides JK Johnson. Be nice to have an update on him. Hope he'll be healthy by spring. Unless you're meaning Harris and Chestnut, which I would agree, are taking up some important roster spots at the moment. I know Harris can't transfer to an FBS without having to sit. Maybe they give him another chance. Is it possible Chestnut graduates after spring? Would suck for him to have to join a new team in the summer, but I doubt he wants to transfer to FCS. Sounds like he burned his bridge with Kelly, but as long as they're both not in the portal, I'd say it's more likely they're back than not.

The timing of Sage entering the portal is interesting. He and Gilbert don't play the same position. Evaluations were done over a week ago. Maybe we know we've got some guys on board that haven't been announced yet. But I wish he'd have waited til after the bowl. We're gonna be thin there against Wisconsin. And even though he's had a disappointing career so far, I'd rather have Sage back next year than not. Wouldn't want him starting, but he'll be a Sr. who's played a lot and played at multiple positions. Would be nice to have in case of injuries. We may upgrade every DB position significantly talent-wise, but we don't want an entire group of guys who have never played together if the communication this year was any indication. Sometimes the whole is worse than the sum of its parts. We'll see what happens. Crazy that we still have so many scholarship guys at this point.

Corey Raymond buzz is seeming like he's imminent to return

Let's see who he brings in at CB from the portal

Yes, these are the players left for 2024 who are considered corners:

Denver Harris
Duce Chestnut
Zy Alexander
Javien Toviano
JK Johnson
Ashton Stamps
Jeremiah Hughes
PJ Woodland
Wallace Foster
Bernard Causey
Ju'juan Johnson

That's a ton of bodies still, with us talking about 2 more in the portal.

Obviously some should work itself out between Denver/Duce and their situations.

We got a lot of bodies, but do we have any players?

Don’t know, but other than Harris and Chestnut, I’m not sure it’s fair to say we have a bunch of dead weight there. Unproven, granted.

People keep saying that spots are tight. If they are that tight they need to trim some fat.

They have to get another corner and linebacker. I would love for them to add on the d line too.

I think they need one more CB that is a true #1 shutdown. I’d be comfortable with Zy/JK splitting time on the outside. Safeties between Jardin/Burns/Toviano? Is also better. I’d like to bring in one more safety
