I think it's annoying that these attention seekers aren't happy with the extent of the attention they're getting. I think it's obnoxious they put the crosses into their paint...It's slightly better than the people that carry around religious signs on Bourbon St. Why is LSU obligated to promote their choice of religion?
LSU WASN'T OBLIGATED TO USE THAT PHOTO IN THE FIRST PLACE.
One of them posted here. THEY aren't upset. Read back in the thread.
College kids have been painting their bodies for games for years. They also wear religious symbols. I wear one everyday. Not a big deal. LSU could have chosen not to use the pic AT ALL. LSU, not the posse, chose to use the pic and airbrush it. Had they used something else, this discussion would not exist. LSU, not the kids, brought attention to this. LSU = stupid.

Think about how many pictures you've seen as promotions for teams the involved fans at a game. It's safe to assume the vast majority didn't require permission.

In that agreement does it state that the university has the right to change or alter your image.
BTW, just because it is there doesn't mean that it won't/can't be taken to court. I've worked for many years in a field where all images must be approved by the people whose likeness is being used. Suits were won in the past (and this includes peons who won) over less than this.
LSU has the right to alter any image they choose, but should probably use better judgement in altering images of people in images they choose to feature. Probably should pick images of people they don't have to alter.

What would these four guys win in terms of compensation/damages?

The Reveille brought attention to this, not LSU.

To somehow feel superior to someone else. Kind of like the poli board.

Things like this change, especially since it is an advertising campaign. Hell, you've never lived until you've seen Disney go into small day care centers and sue them for painting images of Mickey Mouse without their approval. Hell, you have to get permission from LSU and pay a fee to use LSU, Tigers, etc. to the university on any product made, even students using it for LSU student organizations are supposed do so.

It's a good pic of super fans. I like the pic, I'm just not interested in their religious leanings.

If somebody responds to you with a censorship issue, I feel like my head is going to explode. It's not like lsu stopped these guys from sporting the crosses. They just used a smart policy for an advertisement.

This situation and the Disney situation aren't remotely similar. There was no agreement made between the day care and Disney like in this LSU situation.

Those logos are their property.
When you're a nobody, and go into a public place, isn't your image generally fair game?

Not necessarily. My years of experience working with models, celebs along with their agents and lawyers tells me otherwise, especially when images are altered for advertising purposes.

My image is my property and no has the right to use of it without contractual agreement and financial compensation when it is being used for a businesses advertising/marketing campaign.

Then we arrive back at the original point. If you want to use my likeness, use my likeness. Don't, however, alter my likeness to portray me in a way that I do not approve of. Removing religious symbolism that is intentionally and specifically added every game falls into this category. LSU was being greedy. "Hey- these guys are spirited and look intense- let's use their photo! Oh wait, they paint crosses on themselves every game... well, let's just airbrush that and compare it to wrinkled jersey edits or making Saban look thin." I'd feel ripped off if I specifically went out of my way to identify myself by my religion every gameday then LSU mis-characterized me to make me look secular when I am trying to present myself as otherwise.
Solid fricking post. I think this is spot on.

Yeah, when you used that ticket to get into the game, you agreed to the contract.

As for as "Christians" making a big deal out of it... Yes I am making a big deal out of it because I actually believe in something.
I was more talking about the kids in the photo complaining to the media about what LSU did to the original photo.
What do you actually believe in? Are you asserting, because I am an atheist, that I don't have beliefs?
I don't care about the decision to change it, what intrigues me is the reaction to the decision to change it.

Obviously it isn't just trivial to you either
I'm not offended at all by the cross, and I wouldn't have minded if they left them on. I find it pathetic that it pisses off so many Christians though when it is a non-issue.

You may want to rethink what you believe because I think you don't even know.
I'm not sure what this means.

If you guys are so upset over this, then how about you give up your season tickets and stop being fans of LSU? Otherwise STFU and find something else to bitch about.

Agree w/lack of damages......
BUT, to whomever got rid of the cross?
Straight to a lake of hellfire and eternal damnation, where there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
FACT.
