Like someone else said on another thread, buy Coach O a lifetime supply of Red Bull and turn him loose and we'll have a top-3 class in no time. He's that good.

Guys, any way you slice it, Clancy Pendergast is one of the finest defensive minds in football today.
He has fashioned, schemed and coached top defensive units in college and the NFL, including a Super Bowl defense.
It doesn't matter if its the beginning of hiring season with all potential applicants looking for jobs, or the end of hiring season when most of them have found jobs.
If you land Clancy Pendergast as your defensive coordinator, you have knocked it out of the ballpark.
No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

CP wouldn't have been the best hire a month ago in the first run of coaching changes, but that game has played out and the dust has settled. He is the best guy available who doesn't have a current job, making him much more easily attainable. I think some of you underestimate how difficult it would be to pry an employed DC away from their current gig at this point. Then you are talking about overpaying and exposing the program to embarrassing nos. This is about timing.
How do you know that you couldn't get Brent Venables or Bob Shoop. Either one of them would be a home run hire IMO. Go research Venables or Shoop.

This is the defensive ranking of Clancy Pendergasts for points allowed during his tenure as a DC n the NFL. Also noting before and after rankings.
Arizona
2003 under Larry Marmie - 32nd (Clancy hired)
2004 - 12th
2005 - 26th
2006 - 29th
2007 - 27th
2008 - 28th (Clancy fired)
What was the offensive ranking including TOP and points scored?
The most important attribute about this hire is everywhere he went, turnovers were high and sacks went up. It's up to the offense to capitalize on that. And Arizona even in those years could not efficiently.

Go research Venables
I did this the other day and his numbers are astounding. Posted them on the Rant but nobody wanted to see them "because he'd just signed his contract extension".
Regardless, LSU has spoken to him and right now he's in 3rd place.
1a. Clancy
1b. Steele
3. Venables

Is there interest from Venables?
Posted on 1/3/15 at 9:43 am to mytigger
If it were me and I could hire Venables I would do it tomorrow. Shoop is not very well known but he is an outstanding coach. Look at what Venables and Shoop have done with their defenses, they both have outstanding records.

From my understanding Venables is showing some interest. Don't know if it is a ploy to get more money, but either way he is definitely worth extra. Steele should be moved down the list though. He has fallen in our selections since we have gotten interest from other guys. I have heard that from more than 1 person

Any real updates on the search? I would have thought that we'd be beyond foggy rumors 5 days after the fact.

Ok, so here are the Arizona offensive rankings in terms of points scored. As you can see the offense made steady improvements, from 32nd in the league to 3rd in the league, while the defense continued to stay in the high 20's.
2003 under Larry Marmie - 32nd / Offense -32nd (Clancy hired)
2004 - 12th / O - 26th
2005 - 26th / O - 17th
2006 - 29th / O - 19th
2007 - 27th / O - 7th
2008 - 28th / O - 3rd (Clancy fired)
This is why he got fired. The O kept getting better and his defense kept sucking. Romeo Crennel came in the next year and they were #11 on defense.
I'm telling you guys, Clancy Pendergast ain't everything this board is making him out to be.

The only things that have changed are Venables showing some interest and Steele has been moved down the list due to all the people showing interest. CP is still the guy and Trying to fit Ed O in somewhere

What is Venables recruiting skills?
Personally why I like Pendergast over Venables is not because of Pendergast alone rather because of the apparent package deal being worked out to also bring in Coach O. Coach O would give us a huge recruting boost and to stay in competition with Bama season to season we have to first do it on the recruiting trail. Pretty sure other major programs fell apart because of recruiting. Like Tennessee, Notre Dame, etc.

I asked my source this directly and he didn't know. He just told me that Venables was a distant third.
I think Venables is the best candidate of them all.

I think this is what has most people excited. I don't think so many would be clammering for CP if Bebe wasn't in the mix.

If it came down to Venables and Clancy I would pick Venables but because I think coach O is coming in with Pendergast that makes it a better hire IMO.
