more info on Steele...

Les & Nick fought over Steele several years ago with Nick eventually winning out (Steele makes $700k right now). Apparently Nick likes him A LOT and has been quietly working to get Kirby at HC job with the intent to promote Steele to DC. Anything Saban wants to bounce of someone defensively he goes to Steele. Says Smart is "ok" but would be completely lost without Saban. The year Steele was the Admin. Asst. he was Smart's boss.

I think people didn't realize how big an impact Joe Robinson made on our DL even though he wasn't the main coach. The further he got away from the team (after 2010 season), we saw a serious decline in DL performance, and it isn't a coincidence. Haley is a good DL coach, but on his own is not a great one.

Good post.

Why did Robinson leave LSU?

I see he's coaching ST and TEs at USCe now. He was at UNC.

Why did he leave LSU for a lateral position?

New article from the Advocate. These clandestine "sources" are frustrating. I want names

LINK
quote:

The search for a replacement includes Pendergast, a 47-year-old Arizona native who had stints as a defensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals, the Kansas City Chiefs, California and USC. One source said the LSU job would be “a great fit” for the coach, and another source said Pendergast would accept the job if offered.

quote:

LSU coach Les Miles also reached out to former Auburn coach Gene Chizik, multiple sources said. Chizik, though, has accepted the job as the defensive coordinator at North Carolina, according to multiple reports.

The advocate is saying sources close to the situation are saying if Pendergast is offered, he will accept the job. I heard that earlier from someone who has some sources so I'm not sure why Steele is still being mentioned.

Because Les likes Steele as much as Nick does.

Earl Lane was our DLine coach before Haley. lane was awesome. He landed a lot of big time players that Haley lived off of for the next few years. Lane is the guy you should be giving credit too

Can someone sell me on Pendergast? Why are we after him? His defenses got worse every year at Cal and his defense at USC was mediocre at best. Are we giving up on finding a legit DC?

He is a legit coordinator and his defense at USC was best in conference with scholarship limitations against them. What's the point though since it sounds like you've already convinced yourself otherwise

He took a Bears defense, ranked 71st in the nation the year before he arrived, and had them in the top-25 the next two years. He was fired, along with head coach Jeff Tedford, the next season before joining USC. The Trojans defense went from 61st nationally in 2012 to 13th in Pendergast’s one season with the program.

My sources told me they made a run at Gruden, but once he turned them down, they all just said frick it. Now they're just settling for any guy they can get to get it over with.

that article conveniently left off where his defense finished 99th overall in 2012, the year he was fired.

To his defense, he only had 5 starters come back that year. The defense was really young.

I hear ya, but that was his 3rd year as DC. Who was responsible for developing replacements if not him.

With our Jr. departures that seem to occur every year I'm not sure that excuse will hold up very well at LSU.

That is the concern with CP, sustainability.
