LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is not expected to play in the Texas Bowl on Tuesday, according to a report Monday from The Athletic.
Nussmeier, a freshman, is the Tigers' only quarterback on scholarship but is one appearance away from losing his redshirt eligibility — playing in four games this season. LSU submitted a waiver to the NCAA requesting if he could play without sacrificing his status but, according to The Athletic, the appeal was denied.
The Athletic is also reporting that it was Nussmeier's decision not to burn his eligibility for the game

they denied his appeal? frick the NCAA man
On what grounds should the appeal have been granted, and based on what precedent?
The NCAA sucks, but I don't know why anyone thought this would work. If you got your hopes up, that's on you.

Something tells me that Nuss isn't gonna last his whole college career at LSU

Anyone who thought he would was kidding themselves.

medical exemptions, 2 transfers, covid, cause we're providing a product for entertainment purposes in a meaningless fricking game.

Can't get any competitive advantage with Koki or The Athletic.

Would be really interesting to hear why he made that decision. If he's concerned about having a major injury knock him out, then I don't blame him at all. This game literally couldn't have any less meaning. He will be in an entirely new offense next year, so it's not like he's getting time in the new system. Maybe he even talked with BK about this.
But if this is only about maintaining every second of eligibility for the future, that's a bit suspect. With Howard coming in and Brennan back next year, how much time is Nuss going to see here?

The dude should just fricking play.
With Brennan back and Howard coming in, this may be last opportunity to start at LSU.

This was his last/best chance of becoming the starter at LSU. His next chance is the hope that Walker Howard is a bust.
It's a lot more likely that he transfers before the beginning of next year. Frankly, if I'm Kelly, I wouldn't want someone who is not willing to play in the program.

Which of these things apply to Nussmeier? Since the appeal was related to his eligibility. The team context is irrelevant.

I think he's right. Frankly, I find it almost impossible to argue the other way.

It’s pretty relevant when the ncaa expects us to put a product on the field

Taking a closer look at LSU bowl game notes, it has this under O'Dowd player profile.
"Walk-on quarterback who may see his first career collegiate playing time in the Texas Bowl ..."

You can’t even show who is making the call on saving Nuss’ redshirt.
