Team had 82 for the entire season last year. Even if the Tigers don't keep up the current trend of squeaky clean fielding, they are still a world away from last year's sloppiness. That's the main thing ive taken away from the first few weeks of the season.

The pitching has been better too and the hitting is inching back up to where they were last year as well.

It also helps when we keep 10-run ruling nerds.

Better pitching = less hard hit balls = less errors

Better pitching, less balls in play
playing from ahead, less pressure on defense

Errors cost us 3 to 4 games last year straight up. Which cost us a host. Its importance is often overlooked in college, but it will make a good team great.

That’s all true…but Thompson was a head case last year..fact. He looks a lot different so far.

Does competition really matters when it come to team fielding?

What makes a great fielding team isn’t necessarily that they make great plays it’s that they make the routine plays consistently. No matter the competition you have the routine plays.

Thompson was also hurt most of last season, missed practices leading up to season
Never looked comfortable out there until the end

LSU also overshifted at times last season in my opinion and he was caught out of position at times, but I'm not an analytics guy
You are dealing with college players and you don't have the data you have in MLB

I don't think they keep up this pace but they are definitely better than last year but also the pitching is improved so much that it makes the fielding easier.

It can, yeah. Better hitters will put more balls in play and generally hit them harder. So both more chances and more difficult chances increase the probability of an error happening. Also there is just a general increase in the pressure for every individual play to be made.

And those 3 errors we have, have come from:

- Backup infielder Guidry at the end of a blowout game
- Pitcher Cooper on a bad throw to 1B
- Morgan at 1B which he's been in the OF mostly since

Yeah some of the E5’s given to hard hit balls at 3B from Crews are just not fair.

The defense has been a thing of beauty so far.

Yep. And Morgan's error was a kind of mental error throwing to first on that bunt. A little reckless.

Pretty sure Cooper had a throwing error vs Iowa on a bunt.

You're right, the PB on Travinski on the SO which the runner reached 1B technically isnt an error on him but unearned run for the pitcher since he made it around ultimately. Forgot about Cooper's throwing error.

They’re definitely more focused and sound defensively. Hope we didn’t just jinx them.
