I was sitting a section over. The same thing happened 4 years ago when the full band started playing right when their song started and it caused a controversy.
What I noticed this time is LSU waited to play unlike how they normally strike it up immediately after the third quarter ends. They were being respectful. Then I think the director felt they had enough time and if we wait until the song finishes we won't have time to play, so they Started.
The song takes up the entire commercial break. I am sure they have the same problem with every visiting SEC team.

I was at both games too and completely agree with your summary.
My point is that UF can’t have two weird singing traditions in the same quarter. They’ve sung “we are the boys from old florida” for years. Now they’re adding that shite Tom Petty song too. And our band is expected to shut up for the entire break between quarters? No thanks, not a reasonable request.

quote:They do. All the SEC bands that come to Tiger Stadium play over our band. They play during Callin' Baton Rouge. They play over our band. They play any time TGBFTL starts up any song.

I'm tired of LSU being forced to have to take the high road while fans like the Florida fans get to play hypocrite and accuse us of being classless even though their band does the same fricking thing in our stadium.

Maybe it’s not unusual for a visiting band to intentionally disrupt a home-crowd tradition, but that was a classless move.
Playing a Tom Petty song to sing isn’t a tradition. That’s playing shitty piped in music because your band doesn’t have anything of substance to play. Disrupting a recording of a C-list rock star who has no connection to your school isn’t classless. It’s an act of mercy. LSU has “cracked up a song” at the beginning of the fourth quarter for far longer than UF has been pretending Tom Petty have a shite about the Jorts.
Sensitive little writer man getting butt-hurt over here.
It’s Sucks to be a Florida Gator, always.

The LSU band absolutely DID play during the tribute. Just because we're LSU fans, it shouldn't mean we have to excuse LSU for doing something that was in poor taste.

How funny would it be if Florida comes into Tiger Stadium next year and cranks up the Gator fight song just as the Tiger Band starts to hit those first four notes of pregame. LSU fans would be furious that they spoiled our silly little tradition.
I've always loved LSU and always will, but we have way too many trashy fans.

The LSU TGBFT has a lot to learn about timing. Imagine a visiting band throwing shade over a long-established Florida tradition at their own stadium.
Tiger Band waited 3 minutes while their fans sang their school song ("We are the Boys of Florida") and then through "I Won't Back Down" until the guitar solo after most Florida fans cheered because they thought the song was ending. That left only enough time for Tiger Band to go through "Touchdown for LSU" once before play started.
Those are the facts.
Watch the whole sequence here.
From that, you figure that Tiger Band wasn't deferential enough?

IDK, but I'm, beginning to wonder if the UF admin didn't intentionally green light our band to play just to cause the ruckus.
They did exactly that when this whole thing started in 2017: Told Tiger Band to start first and then started playing the Petty tribute on top of them.

BTW, Florida has always been this way. I grew up north of Tampa and know many Gator fans.
Two of my older brothers went to Auburn and attended the 1982 Auburn/Florida game in Gainesville. Florida officials demanded the Auburn cheerleaders not use a portable speaker to lead cheers in their section, restricted when their band played, and were constantly telling Auburn fans to sit down.
I was in Tiger Band when we visited in 1986. They sold tickets to the row of seats that were supposed to be the last row of the band, meaning the tubas were crammed into a much too small a space.
It's a fine university, but their fan base and athletic department are full of douchebags.

The band did not play until the Florida cheerleaders who were dancing on the field were leaving the field. It appeared that the tribute was over and players were coming back onto the field before the band cranked up. The Petty song did continue, but the tribute appeared to be over from what was happening on the field. One could also say Florida did not respect the tradition of the visiting team by planning an event which would take the entire break. Besides, if true that the band didn’t play until they were given the signal from Florida personnel, one can hardly blame the band.
