I don't care if they project to play in the NFL or not. Are they or were they good (or great) football players for LSU. Trev Faulk is a great example... even he would admit that his NFL career is a relative disappointment.
I am sure the players would disagree. They want to get to the next level. LSU is not the end game.
Dont get me wrong! We have had some damn good LB's. I just wonder why we can sign 5 stars all over the field but for some reason we have bever really signed major bad arse LB's.

I seen them in Spring and I don't really have a concern for talent as much as depth. Riley is going to be a good one, if his foot is fully healed and Kelvin is a big hitter. We're fine. Plus we have some young studs for depth now like Baker.
48 Darry Beckwith MLB 6-1 232 Sr. 3L
54 Jacob Cutrera MLB 6-4 236 Jr. 2L
56 Perry Riley SLB 6-1 240 Jr. 2L
11 Kelvin Sheppard SLB 6-2 237 So. 1L
52 Ace Foyil WLB 6-3 231 Jr. SQ
17 Shomari Clemons WLB 6-1 232 Fr. RS

I agree. Danny McCray is a good football player who you don't want to covering a WR man to man.
Fixed.
That's not a scheme problem. That's a personnel problem...asking a guy to do something that he is not very good at. McCray had trouble staying with WRs down field, but even when he had good coverage, got lost with the ball in the air allowing the WR to make the catch. He'd probably be a much better pure safety.

LB is not a "talent" problem as much as it is a "depth" problem.
Wow, a poster that knows what he is talking about. It amazes me how many "fans" of LSU know nothing about the team.
We are probably a little thin but our front line starters should be pretty top notch. We have been going increasingly towards a more nickel-type approach against spread teams. We are seeing a greater # of spread teams this season. This should help with the depth issues. Assuming, the new two-headed monster follows in Pellini's footsteps (as they reportedly will) you will be seeing a lot more of CJ filling in as the third LB/Rover/SS/Nickel/Gunner/whateverterminologyyourteamuseshere.

If I were a LB stud coming out of HS, I wouldn't sign with LSU, because LSU's defensive schemes are atrocious for LBs.
Please elaborate.

"Cutera was a 4 star, but he could be the slowest LB in the sec."
He runs a 4.6 forty right now. For being 6'4 and weighing close to 240 right now that aint slow. He hurt his ankle in the Florida game last year and that slowed him down for the rest of the season along with playng with a seperated shoulder.

What's wrong with saying that depth is not a problem?
We go three deep at LBer.
Starters:
Riley/Clemmons
Beckwith
Sheppard
Second team:
A. Foyle
Clemmons/Riley
Cutrera
Third team:
Kellen Theriot
Prater and
Ryan Baker
(not ment to be a depth chart, just showing our depth.)

Me saying that we have more of a depth problem than a talent problem is exactly what you said in the sentence that I bolded. I meant nothing more than that. Our frontline starters are talented. We just don't have the depth. What you just said.

Cutrera is up from 227 to 245. He is finally healthy. Had a bum shoulder all last year and got cut the day after the BCS game (Kellen Theriot got the same surgery right after the spring game).
He is no slower than a Mike LB should be (Lionel Turner). He had a couple of TERRIBLE plays against Arky (as did many others), and people are equating "slow" to "reaction". I think he will see some PT in the rotation with his chance to start next year.
Sheppard and Riley are starting with Darry. Foyil is NOT #2 on the depth chart. Cutrera and Clemons will be #4 and #5. They will be in nickel/dime 60% of the time, therefore 5 healthy LB's will be enough.
We have won 2 National championships with LB's who have had or will have little NFL glory. Way too much emphasis by the fans.
And just because Chad Jones, Danny McCray, Harry Coleman, etc. hit hard and weigh over 200, it DOES NOT mean you can just plug them into a new position and expect instant success.

this is the same group of fools that thought highsmith was the fastest linebacker lsu ever had. just because the boy is white doesn't make him slow. 4.6 and weighs 240lbs thats pretty good
Posted on 8/5/08 at 7:53 pm to TEABAG15
At the begiining of camp last year Cutrera actually had the fastest time out of ALL the linebackers. Thats a fact jack. He was hurt all of last year. Some people just dont understand.
Posted on 8/5/08 at 7:56 pm to fossil
no he can't be one of the fastest linebackers he's big and white only black football players are fast
Posted on 8/5/08 at 7:59 pm to TEABAG15
Damn I forgot he was a white boy. Nevermind, he is slow.

biggest weakness on defense = McCray #44
Lets see, the guy was a part time player. Nickle and Dime packages. He had more tackles than Starter Curtis Taylor (10 more). As far a returning players only Beckwith and Pittman had more tackles last year. Guess Bo doesn't know?

Really, I had 101 tackles to lead the team last year.
