Trying to find the name of a tiger punter who played on the team around 1948. He almost always kicked the ball out on coffin corners and played in the pros for several years. I believe he was from the shreveport area.

The 1948 team went 3-7 and lost at home to Tulane 46-0. LSU had ZERO passing yards in the game and only 108 total yards. LSU also only had 7 first downs.

I don't see any mention of who the punter on that team was, but it appears he got plenty of opportunities to shine.

I found the punter before him.

Jeff Burkett

From Hattiesburg and died in a plane crash.

quote:

After playing at LSU, Burkett was signed by the Cardinals. He was not only a punter for the Cardinals, but was also one of the team's receivers as well. Though his career only consisted of three games before his untimely death, Burkett had caught two passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. In addition to playing end and punter, Burkett also played as a defensive back, intercepting a pass and returning it for 25 yards

Pretty interesting.

And then Jerry Stovall I assume was the punter after whoever the guy the OP is looking for. Stovall also played multiple positions.

Just can't quite seem to find the punter in between these two.

I guess most of the punters back then played other positions? This guy was a top 14 pick. Interesting.

My grandfather was a cornerback and punter for Tulane in 50-51. He never liked LSU and all his children and most grandchildren ended up going to LSU

eta: he never played in the pros

Found this from State Times November 25, 1949. Nothing came up from 47 and 48.
I'll try a few more search strings.

We'll be heading down to see Mom for Thanksgiving next week. If you can be patient I'll go through Dad's Gumbo year books. He was a freshman in '47, so the '48 Gumbo should be around there somewhere and hopefully the answer can be found there.
