The real issue here is does the school routinely get this items back from the athlete. If they let the other athletes keep these items then no theft. If not. Theft.

They don't. We had an entire room full of shoes and LSU football clothing that was just given to my roommate every few weeks. Big games came with new shirts, shoes, etc.
They don't give any of it back. Also, players toss equipment into the stands after every game: gloves, sweatbands, etc.

This is stupid. Nike makes bank but the players have to give back used equipment and uniforms or buy them.
Yet Nike makes a new uniform for Oregon every fricking game.
