PITCHING

Friday Night Starters

LSU- Kurt McCune (3-0; 1.11 era; .125 b/avg; .664 whip; 17 k’s and 5 bb in 24.1 ip)

Put McCune in the pleasant surprise department for LSU in the young season. The freshman RHP landed in the starting rotation when Tyler Jones was suspended and has since become the Friday night starter. He’s not the hardest thrower although his fastball can reach the low 90s , but he relies on a mixture of control and harmless contact that goes for outs.

UF- Brian Johnson (4-0; 1.12 era; .146 b/avg; .625 whip; 25 k’s and 3 bb in 24 ip)

A sophomore LHP with two very generic names but not a very generic arm. In fact he’s a machine on the mound. The guy hadn’t even been scored on until his last outing where he gave up 5 straight two-out hits in the fourth. He will be the best pitcher the tigers have seen in the early season. Oh, he bats and plays first base too so even if you’re sick of him after Friday, you’ll still see him around the entire weekend.

Saturday Night Starters

LSU- Kevin Gausman (2-0; 3.28 era; .195 b/avg; .950 whip; 27 k’s and 6 bb in 24.2 ip)

A freshman RHP that is the hardest thrower of the LSU staff and has the greatest potential. He’s a pitcher that overpowers batters with strikeouts but is still working on control, as is noted by the homeruns and walks given up thus far this season which account for the “high” era. (Which for a college pitcher really isn’t terrible.)

UF- Hudson Randall (2-0; 1.08 era; .187 b/avg; .720 whip; 19 k’s and 1 bb in 25 ip)

Another day, and it’s another great stat line for a Florida starting pitcher. The odd thing here is that Randall a Sophomore RHP has only been credited with 2 wins and one of them came in his worst outing of the season in which he only gave up 5 hits but 3 runs scored. His season highlight came against Miami where he and reliever DeScalafani one hit the ‘Canes.

Sunday Starters

LSU- Ben Alsup (3-1; 2.01 era; .203 b/avg; 1.267 whip; 17 k’s and 11 bb in 22.1 ip)

The Veteran of the group, Alsup, is a control oriented RHP with an interesting pitching history at LSU. Alsup as a younger pitcher struggled until about midway through the 2010 season in which he dialed in to become one of the more consistent pitchers on the staff. He’s had a good start this season although maybe under the radar because let’s face it, his style of pitching is not going to overly impress fans. He’s susceptible to getting into trouble (11 walks, yikes!) but has thus far found ways to pitch out of it. He stays very composed on the bump and is truly one of the leaders of the team.

UF- Karsten Whitson (3-0; 2.21 era; .236 b/avg.; 1.095 whip; 22 k’s and 5 bb in 20.1 ip)

Whitson is a freshman RHP and has experienced a great amount of success in his first four starts this season. He was the ninth overall pick in the MLB amateur draft by the Padres. He comes equipped with a fastball in the mid 90s and posses’ good control of both a slider and change-up; overall a very young arm with seemingly unlimited potential.

Bullpen

LSU-
Jimmy Dykstra (3-0; 7 app; 3.75era; .239 b/avg; 1.000 whip)
Kevin Berry ( 9app; 0.00 era; .120 b/avg; .563 whip)
Matty Ott (9 app; 2.00 era; .182 b/avg; .666 whip; 4 sv )

(Could also throw Eades, Cotton, Rumbelow, or Jones)

LSU lacks any proven depth in the bullpen. Many have had good outings, but the pen is the reason that some games have been closer than maybe they should have. LSU will need its starters to go deep into games to preserve arms and chances to win.

UF-
Nick Maronde (8 app; 1.69 era; .256 b/avg; 1.176 whip)
Tommy Toledo (7 app; 2.38 era; .175 b/avg; .900 whip 1 sv)
Greg Larson (7 app; 2.77 era; .213 b/avg; .769 whip)
Steven Rodriguez ( 7 app; 2.25 era; .323 b/avg; 1.625 whip; 1 sv)
Anthony DeScalfani ( 8 app 1.29 era; .140 b/avg; .643 whip; 2 sv)

UF has the deepest pen in the SEC. They can throw multiple arms at a team and keep them off balance or they could have any of the above names enter in the 5th and pitch the remainder of the game. The goal is always to get the starting pitcher out of the game early, but in this case, LSU will need to on top of their game at the plate for all nine innings.

BATTING
LSU-

Trey Watkins (.263 avg; .411 ob%; 9/10 in sb/att)
Raph Rhymes (.382 avg; 8 doubles; 19 rbi; 18 runs scored)
Tyler Hanover (.345 avg; 11 bb; 19 runs scored)
Mikie Mahtook (.328 avg; 6 hr; 21 rbi; 25 runs scored; 9/11 in sb/att)
Austin Nola (.339 avg; 6 doubles; 2 triples; 17 rbi; 16 runs scored)
Mason Katz (.344 avg; 6 doubles; 20 rbi; 17 runs scored)
Grant Dozar/Alex Edward (.158/ .302)
Ty Ross/ Jordy Snikeris (.235/.211)
Jacoby Jones (.439 avg; 3 hr; 16 rbi)

Overall it’s one of the most rounded lineups in the SEC. Everyone is a contributor and they can strike at anytime. They hit for power in the early part of the season but have since manufactured runs with consistent and clutch hits, patience at the plate, and good base running. The task this weekend will be the toughest for potentially the entire season, but I can assure you UF hasn’t faced a lineup this deep yet. The weak spots in the lineup are in the 7 and 8 holes although things seemed to be coming around in the past week. You’d like to see a higher avg and ob% from the lead-off spot, but it hasn’t hurt the tigers yet though because whenever one player is lulling the rest of the line-up picks up the slack. The tigers will need to continue the offensive production and really challenge the Florida pitchers if they are to have a chance at taking the series.

Game breakers:

Mikie Mahtook

Raph Rhymes

Jacoby Jones

Other dangerous bats include: Nola, Hanover, and Katz…ya this team is pretty deep as far as batting goes.

UF-
Nolan Fontana (.322; .468 ob%; 18 runs scored; 14 bb)
Daniel Pigott (.483 avg; 10 doubles; 18 rbi)
Preston Tucker (.371 avg; 7 doubles; 4hr; 17 rbi;)
Austin Maddox (.275 avg)
Brian Johnson (.314 avg; 5 doubles)
Mike Zunino (.291 avg; 3 hr; 17 runs scored; 4/4 in sb/att)
Ben McMahan (.241)
Josh Adams (.321 avg; 4 doubles; 13 rbi)
Zach Powers (.233)
Ben McMahan (.241)

Florida’s line-up will be different everyday. It’s hard to find an order they’ve used more than once. They have a number of guys who get at bats but there are a few big time sluggers that garner more attention than the rest of the line-up. The surprise has been the somewhat lack of production for the Gators, especially Austin Maddox who they’d like to see return to last year’s form. The top of the order is most certainly the place to look when you’re scouting for production. Pigott has been batting out of his mind and Fontana is a great lead-off guy. Preston Tucker is the other big bat to watch although guys like Zunino and Adams are consistent contributors. The team hasn’t put up gaudy numbers but could still be one of the better line-ups the Tigers have faced thus far.

Game breakers:

Daniel Pigott

Preston Tucker

Nolan Fontana

Other offensive contributors: Brian Johnson and Josh Adams

Fielding

LSU-

.960 fld%; 14dp; 3 caught stealing out of 21 attempts (not too good)

LSU’s defense thus far has been miserable. There is just no way around it. It’s a bit surprising and it’ll even itself out as the season wears on but there is no hiding the fact that LSU is prone to errors. They have committed 26 errors in 17 games. In case you’re wondering that’s pretty terrible. Sure they’re not paid professionals but when you’re averaging over an error and a half per game, you’re putting men on base or advancing runners that would otherwise be outs. This could be a major factor in a close game. So if it’s the 7th inning and LSU hasn’t committed an error yet and it’s a close game, hold your breath.

UF-

.977 Fld%; 16 dp; 2 caught stealing out of 7 attempts

They are a pretty solid fielding team with good fundamentals. They have a good defensive SS in Fontana and a great Catcher in Mike Zunino. Their weakest link is at 3b where Zach Powers already has 5 errors which makes up 1/3 of the team overall.

*****************SUMMARY*********************

Statistically speaking Florida has a better overall starting rotation and a deeper Bullpen. LSU has the offensive firepower to combat the strong UF arms. It’ll truly be a strength vs. strength matchup.

LSU has more speed and probably plays a better small ball game in close situations but UF has a better defense. For LSU to win they will need to be on top of pitchers early and often and take anything the pitchers give them. UF simply needs to get the bats going and let their pitchers keep the LSU hitters in check.

This could wind up being the best series of the entire season and it’s the first week of SEC play. It’s more than likely that this will be a highly completive series and will need all three games to decide a winner.

The intangibles are in favor of LSU in this situation with home field advantage and late game bat magic that every LSU team through history has seemed to posses. However the LSU bullpen hasn’t necessarily been clutch this season so look for scoring to happen often later in games although LSU has had a penchant for jumping on teams early. It’ll probably take a once through the order for the hitters to solve the starting pitching.

Great breakdown, guy

A few things tiger fans need to remember: 1. This is SEC weekend #1, there are 9 more after. 2. UF is probably the best team we will play this season and my favorite to win it all.

Even if we lose this series and don't look very good doing it, there is a TON of baseball left to play.

That said, I hope we sweep their arse

Vandy has been awfully impressive as well, their pitching is dominant and their offense is as good as Florida's.
