Total D LSU (16)* 295.3 ypg, 4.46 ypp A&M (62) 374.8 ypg, 5.26 ypp
Rush Y LSU (19) 106.0 ypg, 3.31 ypr A&M (85) 182.6 ypg, 4.57 ypr
Pass Y LSU (36) 187.5 ypg A&M (42) 192.2 ypg
Pass efficiency LSU (43) 114.15 A&M (52) 115.98
Scoring LSU (47) 21.5 A&M (44) 21.0
3rd down LSU (39) .321 A&M (24) .296
1st down LSU (29) 19.75 fdpg A&M (87) 21.04 fdpg
Sacks LSU (24) 2.75 spg A&M (4) 3.8 spg
TO LSU 1.5 tpg A&M 1.6 tpg

*Numbers in parentheses are national ranks.

Just to be complete, also including team defensive stats under Chavis last year through 13 games. No ranks available.

Total D 316.8 ypg, 4.9 ypp
Rushing 152.7 ypg, 4.32 ypr
Passing 164.2 ypg, 10.72 ypc, 5.5 ypa
Scoring. 17.5 ppg
3rd down eff. .360
First downs 15.5 fdpg
TFL. 5.85 tflpg
TO 1.5 topg
Sacks 1.46 spg

Other than scoring, third down efficiency, and first downs per game, 2015 D appears to be doing better than last year's D. However, must take into effect that 2015 stats are thru 4 games and not yet the meat of our schedule, while last year's stats are thru all games.

Head to head this year's defense seems superior to A&M's defense other than third down efficiency (surprising to me), sacks, and TFL. It will be interesting to compare stats at the end of the year. But, then again, the only stats that truly matter are W's and L's.

All I know is Fournette's gonna run through that soft middle of theirs like a knife through butter.

Chavis has always struggled stopping the power running game too

It's going to be so damn lovely

Arkansas ran on them all day. LSU is going to rush for 500.

We are tackling better, forcing more turn overs, and getting sacks/pressure better than last season.

That's what matters most to me.

We are also shutting opponents out in the first half, allowing us to mount a lead forcing teams to play catch up in the 2nd half.

It has been a recipe for winning success.

Wow this is what I expected to read. (responses)

1. Big deal we have a better defense than A&M.
2. Chavis has only been there one year. Look what he has done with them so far.
3. Third and Chavis or third and Steele!!!

Butter that's been sitting out all day, not even refrigerated butter.

Well, that's pretty important.

We need to sharpen up our pass defense for Flerda. I know we are capable, but our guys have been playing loose coverage all this season.

You could not be further from the truth. Have you watched LSU's defense versus Alabama and Arkansas over the last several years? Neither of those teams ran roughshod on LSU despite having several NFL-caliber tailbacks.

Now that would be a great record for a number of reasons

I am glad to see you recognize this. so many folks don't. each game is situational and mediocre stats in some games is only reflective of the competition and the way the defensive game plan goes. imo, the stats you quoted do not reflect anything meaningful except that chavis has indeed improved the aggies defense. or rather, their outstanding DE's have improved their D.

Neither team has played anyone of note. Will be interesting how it shakes out at the end of the year.

Basically, other than the gaudy sack totals (which are impressive, to be fair), it's been the same Aggie defense. For as much has been made about their improvement, they are still giving up 5.26 yards per play, good for 10th in the conference and 62nd nationally.

That's an improvement from 2014, but only because they were a horrendous 97th nationally last year (5.91). Still a pretty mediocre defense.

Well done gathering all the Defensive stats!! Props to you....

I didn't like Chavis at UTK and I didn't like him at LSU.... He is a horrible Defensive coordinator IMO.... The only reason why he had success at LSU was because of the talent we recruited by Wilson and others..... Glad he left

Trying to compare Steele to Chavis is a complete waste of time.... Chavis will sink TEX AM eventually. Just matter of time....

Only defensive stat that matters.

Texas A&M ppg - 21.00000
LSU ppg - 21.5
