Props to OP.
When you look at PPP (points per possession), I have a hard time seeing this team lose to anybody.
Our D will always get at least one more stop than the opponent’s D. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the better D, because nobody had an offense like ours. But ours will score at least one more point than any opponent with the misfortune to have to face us.
Tl;dr: We’re winning the ship and there ain’t a damn thing anyone can do about it.

So where do those rank vs other teams? LSU is around 40 in pints per play. Georgia, Ohio State, and Clemson are 1, 2, and 3.
I'm not super concerned about the defense, though I do see some issues and I would like them to do better. I'm also not trying to reach for data to bolster my lack of concern or, more likely, convince myself the concern I feel is without merit.

It’s a very talented defense. If we played like we have in the first half this year for entire games it probably could have been a great defense.
Which is why it’s a quality depth issue. We just can’t rotate players enough to keep them going for a full 4 quarters.

They can’t. We can get 3 good quarters out of them if they are pumped (look at the Bama game). That’s the max they can go before getting exhausted. This is where depth becomes so important. If we had quality depth at several positions, we could rotate and keep everyone fresh for an entire game. It’s just not there this year.

I think you make a good point.
Our defense is filled with good players, but not as many great ones as usual. That's why the talent excuse can't be made, the talent is there. Safety is thin, CB is thin, LB is thin, DL is thin.

We have quality depth, just not a lot of experienced depth at the DB position.
I don't think that explains the explosion of big plays though.

And many of the “big plays” have happened against many a backup player. Some of this is just inexperience in the backup and some is just that they just aren’t as good as the starters.
Also, you have to keep in mind that when you are up big on a team, they tend to go with more “high risk/great reward” plays. That would naturally lead to more “big plays”.
Again, I’m not saying this is a “great defense”. It’s not. It has problems. But it’s still very much good enough (paired with this offense) to win the national championship.

The 2019 LSU defense is about .04 points per drive worse than an average LSU defense, which is not great, but it’s definitely not all time bad.
The complaints have more to do with the mistakes and lack of execution this late in the season. That is a legitimate problem that we haven’t normally had over the last decade.

Being up big explains that. Opponents will take greater chances with the “risk/reward plays. They have nothing to lose at that point.
I admit the 3rd and long issue is very puzzling. We have the play called to stop it, but we often play a little too far away from the first down mark for some reason.

The question is how many more drives per game are they having to defend?

My opinions align with yours 100%.
Not that my opinion means jack shite.

Great stats.
I’m curious, Have you compared the number of drives from year to year?
With us scoring so much, are our opponents having more possessions than years past?
If so, how many more?
More opportunities to score could obviously lead to more points scored on our D.

What's all the bitching about we are only ranked 43rd on defense

I haven't seen any recently, but I know earlier in the season it was still about the same number of drives roughly. When you think about it though, this year our offense is putting the defense back on the field quickly after touchdowns. Last year they were on the field quickly because of three and outs. So logic might seem those numbers would be different because we are scoring more, but it's probably really not. Time of possession I would guess would measure similarly as well.

I’ll see if there is a way to check that but I don’t think they have drive by drive/play by play on the ESPN app for previous years, so I’d have to figure something else out

Where do we rank in points per letters in our opponents mascot’s name, and why do either of these make a lick of difference? Points per drive? Okay. Points per play? Ehhh, who cares?

Wrong, we are currently #2.

Can you link that? I love when people's parade gets rained on. Not that he will show back up to defend it.
