Let me explain how fricked up our compliance dept is. There is a test called the TOEFL, it is an exam for foreign students to test their understanding of the english language. It is not required at all by the NCAA. However, our compliance dept requires a certain score for athletes coming in from international countries.
LSU REQUIRES the TOEFL (see quote from LSU website). The scores listed below are LSU's required scores, not athletics.
"If English is not your native language, you must provide your TOEFL or IELTS scores for proof of English language proficiency. Either test’s scores must be sent directly through the TOEFL or IELTS website. TOEFL scores require LSU’s school code of 6373."
Required (TOEFL) Scores for Automatic Admission
TOEFL (paper-based exam) 550
TOEFL (internet-based exam) 79
IELTS 6.5

Admissions and student athlete admissions are completely different, c'mon man. You think the GPA to get into LSU is the same for regular admissions and student athlete admissions?

Student athletes have minimum standards set by the NCAA, and the schools can increase those to whatever they want. TOEFL is not an NCAA requirement.

If this is true then obviously compliance is going to fight Wade coming back tooth and nail

Schools only have to hold athletes to the admission standards set forth by the NCAA. Clearly, LSU, Florida, etc are not holding its athletes to the same admission standards as normal students, they are reverting to the NCAA baseline
For whatever reason, LSU does not budge on the TOEFL, where the other schools do.

LSU compliance works against our athletic programs, not with.

read where a poster on another board had a messed up story about our compliance department. Basically said during Cam Robinson's recruitment, his mom and him were touring the campus, and it was very hot and they were sweating. A coach gave them two cold water bottles and then some compliance person saw it happen, went up to them, took the water bottles from them, and told them if they wanted water there was a vending machine down the hall.

But as far as the TOEFL for athletes I am only aware of the other SEC schools, as that was the complaint we brought forth to the compliance dept when I was at LSU

Was it not the compliance dept that kept football players from playing after being cleared by others to play?

I can only comment on how they were with tennis. Honestly tennis teams deal with compliance more than most sports, and are at their mercy often. Alot of grey areas with all the international players regarding time away from school, pro money, etc etc
Ours was very strict and punitive compared to the other schools around the SEC for tennis. I would imagine that carries over for the other sports as well

Which, for the most part, is a good thing. You want a struct compliance department to keep you out of trouble. However, our compliance department has a known reputation of going out of its way to find violations that are edge cases (or borderline, but technically legal) and submitting them to the NCAA
I know there was a women's tennis recruit who was approved to play by the NCAA. Our compliance department continued to check even after she was approved, found some information on a tournament she had played in back in high school that could affect her eligibility, and turned it in to NCAA. The NCAA then agreed, and she had to sit out for an entire season.
This is where, to me, it crosses the line. The NCAA didn't even find this (borderline, but technically was) violation. It was already signed and done. They work against us even when the NCAA already ruled in our favor. There's plenty more stories like this. Coaches want the compliance department to be strict and do due diligence, but not actively work against them.

I thought this thread was about how the compliance department in athletics is screwing over athletes. Compliance (athletics) takes their orders (about admissions) from the University.
