When i was in ROTC at LSU we started a competitive shooting team and competed against some other small schools. it started to grow when I graduated. Not sure what happened to it after I left. But the range and equipment exists.

That is super cool. Thanks for posting!

In the realm of the "even less politically correct than referring to young women as co-eds," did you notice the next article down? It refers to a "giant Omaha negro" named Bearcat Wright who claimed to be the colored heavyweight boxing champion. I have not previously heard of Bearcat Wright, but I suspect he was plenty bad azz.

The Co-Ed Rifle Team is pictured on p. 158 of 338 in the 1930 Gumbo. No names.

The 1930 Southern Conference Mens Basketball Tournament is starting and your worried about shooters.

(Goddam Gumpers won the whole thing over Duke in the Finals)

LSU (obviously) lost to Duke in the First Round

your dad must have been a good shot...if he got medals from some camp in Ohio, it was probably Camp Perry where the National Matches are still held. my uncle was on the US Army Europe (USAREUR) rifle team and participated there

It was Camp Perry!!!

National Rifle Matches for sure.......thanks so much. He was hell of a shot, interestingly he wasn't much of an outdoorsman.....I had to pick up that on my own

I had to go down the rabbit hole.

Bearcat Wright

Pretty interesting article. Certainly was a different time back then. hell Bearcat even fought Jethro Bodine's daddy in 1936.

My father was an 11B, Infantryman, in the Army. He coached the Auburn Rifle team from 1970-72. He was stationed there teaching in the ROTC dept. He eventually got the West Point coaching job for 21 years. Varsity sport at Army! Greatest job in the Army.
