Who wants to play for Steeples and House scheme where CBs play 15 yards off WR and are expected to make plays.

You probably didn’t notice, but that changed toward the end of the season. We had guys playing a fair amount of bump and run the last two or three games.

BK has plenty of 3 star recruits he has his eye on.

Honestly, I don’t know if it’s fair to pass judgment on defensive play this year, and especially under House. We recruit athletes who play man coverage throughout their whole careers and are built for it, then install zone schemes.

We NORMALLY have athletes that can play man coverage. We DIDN'T this year. I mean, unless you think Kelly, House and the secondary coach intentionally sabotaged LSU's defense.
Last year, we brought Bernard-Converse from Okie State and Garner from ULL. They were better than anyone we had on the roster, so they started. They did OK, and then moved on.
This year, we brought in Zy Alexander from Southeastern, and Duce Chestnut from Syracuse. And again, they were better than anyone we had on the roster, so they started.
And they WEREN'T OK, they got abused by good WRs. So Chestnut quit on the team and will transfer, Alexander died a thousand painful deaths on the field, and oh BTW we brought in a talented problem child in Denver Harris who could never claim a spot, even though it was his for the taking.

So we were stuck with guys WORSE than Chestnut and Alexander, and the coaches decided the safest thing to do was play a soft zone and hope the QB missed.

HOPEFULLY we now have guys in the pipeline who can play, and will be ready to step up. But if they weren't freshmen this past season, I don't count on any of them.

As somebody else pointed out- if Welch couldn't take a spot this season, I doubt losing him will hurt.

If he can't move to the Portal until December 4th unless his coach is leaving, perhaps he knows more about Steeples destination more than we do.
