Hard to imagine if you weren't there, but LSU basketball back in the Macklin-Scales-Martin-Hultburg-Sims-Cook days was just as big an event and as exciting as LSU football.

That was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away it seems like now

1980 ish was awesome. You couldn't hear yourself speak. Saw Derrick Taylor drop last second shots to win as well as Kyle Macy drop one to win an SEC Championship. I wish we could get back there now, but this is an all football school now because of money(baseball is great too but thats not what the university is worried about).

All-Time W-L record is hardly the end-all sophisticated measure of a program for all-time ranking purposes.

Conference crowns must be weighted, Conf tourney wins, NCAA appearances, Elite 8s, Final Fours, Conf POYs, All-Americans, etc..very important.

I'd have to rank Fla's back-to-back natty titles, and Ark's Richardson one as an SECer, in being above LSU, along with Ky.

That said, nothing going back to Paleolithic eras, if going by any other SEC school in the modern eras, none sans UK/Fl/Ark, would rate over LSU's three Final 4s, many Elite 8s, SEC titles, AAs, POYs, and assorted litany of losses in the Dance to eventual Natty Champs and Final Four teams.

As Dale Brown once antagonized the NCAA Gestapo Bastards, and at times, drew strange draws in brackets with the Vegas chalk to win it all..some years far defying proper pairing logic.

Anyone who thinks Trent Johnson needs to be fired is hands down dumb and knows nothing about basketball.

Like Rusilo said on AFR today "you don't win coach of the year in 3 different conferences by accident, Johnson is a great coach"

the program has lost more players than it has brought in the past two years - dennis harris, garret green, aaron dotson, bo spencer, darron populist (walk on) and the other white kid who was a good shooter - that's half the team gone b4 their eligiblity was up. You cant replace that many players overnight. Hickey was a great find late in the recruiting process. Johnny has tremendous upside. Our seniors have gotten better as their careers have progressed. Storm is a terrific rebounder and finisher. Most of the pieces of the puzzle are there. If Gathers comes next year you have Justin at center, Gathers and Johnny at forward, Ralston at the 2 guard and Hickey at point - that is a solid starting five. We are close to being back at the top tier of the SEC. the last 2 years were a disaster. Trent has taken nevada and stanford to sweet 16 and knocked off a #1 ranked UNC team that was loaded when he was at stanford to reach sweet 16. He is getting it done slowly but surely. We will get there - hang in there and get on board. We have the coach we need - we just need more support and a little more faith in what we have going !

In response to the poster who said baseball doesnt generate money, that is not true. 35 or so home dates with paid attendences around 7,000 and suites means revenue. Basketball is the third sport at this school. You can talk about the Dale Brown days but football was weaker at the time and basketball had it's run. With baseball's sucess along with becoming a top program, basketball is lost. Tj is building a program the right way and stressing academics and these guys battle. We are a dominant perimeter player away from being a tournament team. As far as the crowds, they havent been bad considering the students were out for christmas. Tonight, the students showed out. Unfortunately, Baton Rouge is a working town and it's hard for people to get to games by 6. The weather was awful also. The marquette game was hostille and we had a bigger crowd for virgina. Kentucky will be a big crowd also. Geaux Tigers and Geaux TJ

Helped that it was a priority point night, but hopefully the exciting game (and W) will keep students interested for future games. We need a good showing vs. Kentucky in a few weeks.

I've been saying the same thing for the last 2 years, and the Rantards call me a negatiger and an ahole. I'm a realist. A normal person without purple and gold glasses has to see the state of this program. We get the players that other schools discard. Dale Brown needs to speak about this but he said at the beginning of Trents hiring that he likes Trent, so he don't want to admit that he was wrong. It is embarassing not to have the PMAC even half filled. This will be the third year in a row that LSU doesn't make the NCAA tourney, unless of course they win the SEC tourney which they have only done one time. Sooner or later we will have to pay a top notch coach and everything will take off from there. Trent is not the answer.

Lots of fail in this thread.

1. Let's wait until the season is over, or at least close to being over before we talk about firing people. If it needs to be done then, fine.

2. LSU basketball is the number two sport at LSU and it's not close. Check the budget if you disagree.

3. That list of coaches is a joke. Why not throw Calipari on there.

Typical rantard who doesn't post the whole sentence. That sentence ended with "unless they win the SEC tourney".

Come on Sheepskin, you better than that.

Florida was 21-12 last year, fourth in the SEC and won two games in the SEC tournament and made the field.

Georgia was 21-11 and got eliminated in the first round of the SEC tournament and made the NCAAs in 2009. Tennessee made the tournament at 19-14 in 2009.

What's different this year?

Or does LSU making the tournament at 21-12 just not fit your narrative?

This is not a bad team and TJ doing the best anyone could do what whats there. He recruited what he could referring to Dotson and Derenbecher. If they would have stayed this good team, would have been, so much better.

I would be shocked if LSU makes the NCAA. I just can't see them having a winning record in the SEC. They play good D and have a very good big man and NOBODY else is enen close to making ALL SEC. When you have these types of average players, the team concept comes into play and I don't think LSU's offense plays that good as a team. I think it's a joke that we start two guards that are under 6 foot tall. What other team does that? They will have to play a lot better ball than what they are playing now to even think about making the NCAA tourney.

If we win, fans will show up. Simple as that. The PMAC was packed in the Stromile/Jabari years and then with the Tyrus, Davis, Bass, Tasmin, Temple days.

Right now, though, our roster is as stacked from top-to-bottom as it ever has been in my lifetime.

2004-2006 was way better. We have no stars on this team. We have some real good players, but no one that will make All-American or even All-SEC.

Nope.

People had gotten so sick of John Brady's shite, that only the SUPER BIG games were getting decent crowds.

There were still tickets available the DAY OF the UConn game.

I say work out a deal with Shaq for him to be an assitant coach. With him on the bench really could attract some big name players. Just a thought.
