Tommy Casanova was my good friend’s cousin. I met Tommy a few times and even got to play neighborhood football games with him which was quite a thrill for a 12 year old Tiger fan.

I remember that game. It was not on television. I was at my friend’s house listening to John Ferguson on the radio. We were heartbroken when Tommy dropped the interception in the end zone that would have preserved a scoreless tie. ND kicked their field goal on the next play.

That shows you how long I have been living and dying with the Tigers.

My Dad was there always one of his fondest memories. I do remember him saying Al Coffee dropped a long pass from Jones at some point in the game that would have been a TD. Not sure if that's true or not - never saw the game, guess I'll have to watch it and see.

I was there. It was a very good game.

On the PI call that kept the drive alive, in todays game #12 would have been called for taunting. Then TC dropped that INT in the end zone.

Tough loss..But...like they say. paybacks are a bi+ch. We got 'em back

Could have had another Heisman winner if he had. Never realized this before, but Bert went 2nd in the NFL draft, and his daddy, Dub Jones, went 2nd in the 1946 NFL draft. Cool fact

Belichick was an assistant on the 75 Colts. He said Bert had the best arm of any NFL QB he had ever seen. If he wouldn’t have been hurt he could have been a HOF QB.

People forget he was the NFL MVP in 76.

That pass was barely overthrown. Coffee may have been slightly open but the pass would've had to have been perfect.

Ronnie Estay was a hoss.
That whole defensive line was great that day. Bobby Joe King and Buddy Millican had great days.

I always wondered, thank for the clarification. My Dad was also in Knoxville in 59 and said he was on that goal line and Cannon scored on the two point conversion. Were you there also and was he exaggerating there too?

I didn't realize Belicheck's coaching career stretched back that far. I do recall watching a documentary about John Elway and some old NFL coach or exec making a comparison to Bert Jones and how Jones, if he had not gotten injured, would have been better than Elway.

Bert was so fun to watch… those colt teams of the mid 70’s were really good.

I was at the game in South Bend. Remember ‘Touchdown Jesus and I remember the Casanova drop of the would be interception. What I remember the most about the whole game was watching Walt Putulkski catch Al Coffee from behind on an end around. Also went to the Ara Parsegian Pep Rally the night before in the Field House. We should have left with a W! Good trip - GO TIGERS!

Absolutely correct! Remember hearing that the first time when I was walking around the Stadium in South Bend before the game.

The mid 70s were what eventually costed Charlie McClendon his job, 74 and 75 were really bad teams, 76 would have went Bowling in today's world as many Bowls are in 2024.

That's right. The SID at Notre Dame had Theisman change the pronunciation of his last name so that it would rhyme with Heisman for their campaign for Joe to win the award. Schools had really elaborate publicity campaigns for their players to win the Heisman back then.

I listened to this with John Ferguson on WWL calling the play by play. A great game caller.

LSU's 3 losses that year:

-Opening game against Texas A&M 18-20

-At ND 0-3

-Orange bowl to #1 Nebraska 12-17

We lost 3 games by a combined 10 points, the first
2 on the last play of the game and the Orange Bowl near the very end.

I know 'if',
But if 2 LSU DBs don't collide and allow Carl Roaches of A&M to score
on the last play....
And if Tommy C. holds on to the INT at Notre Dame...
And if Bert doesn't throw an ill-advised INT late in the Orange
Bowl with the Tigers leading 12-10.....

LSU finishes 10-0-1 and maybe a NC.

This after finishing 9-1 in 1969.
