That’s crazy you say that. I almost alluded to it in a response to your previous post about being too selective with 2 strikes. Because I was gonna say JJ’s “it’s either a ball or it’s a line drive” philosophy can really only work like he wants it to if we can trust umpires to just be consistent, not even “good.” But if they have drills that strictly focus on developing an eye for “your strike zone” and only swinging selectivity and they get out there in games and the umps are giving guys 3 inches on both sides or 6 on the outer half or calling higher strikes than PAC12 umps, we’re kinda fricked.

I’d like to see some stats, but I bet we lead the SEC in 0-1 counts. And that changes the entire AB, putting our guys in a more defensive position than offensive and really prevents the “ball or line drive” from working. And if you’ve worked on developing “your” particular zone, it’s hard to turn that off with 2 strikes. The umps suck, but their zones are their zones, and it may be time to tweak some approaches and encourage more guys to go 1st pitch fastball hunting. Like I’m not sure Pearson has swung at a 1st pitch all season—it seems like he starts every AB 0-1–and the 1st pitch turns out to be the best one he sees to drive the whole AB.

I know we do it, but we may need to put a little more effort into self-scouting. I think these SEC teams are picking up and taking advantage of some of our guys’ tendencies.


Sorry, I started this post a bit ago, but stopped typing to watch the Jobert bullshite. I think JJ needs to get run today. I don’t care what for—I just think it’s time. They need to know he’ll fight for them, not merely reason for them.
