According to Max Olson (tAthletic), LSU's defense AINT TOO SHABBY

quote:

Get a stop and get off the field. It’s the most basic measurement of whether a defense is successful. And the successful ones win a lot of games.

We call this simple measure of success stop rate: the percentage of a defense’s drives that end in punts, turnovers or a turnover on downs. This metric can offer a more accurate reflection of a defense’s effectiveness in today’s faster-tempo game.

About LSU

quote:

One point we’ve mentioned in this space before that feels worth reiterating: LSU is definitely not playing bad defense. Do not be fooled by the yards it allows (35th in FBS in total defense), and don’t even fret too much about the number of explosive plays it’s given up (57th in 20-plus yard plays allowed). Because the truth is, Dave Aranda has this talented group playing efficiently. The Tigers rank 17th in stop rate at 74.8 percent, and they’re getting off the field in three plays or less on more than 40 percent of drives.

And yet all I hear is about how LSU will be a doormat to Clemson and Ohio State if/when we play them

Forget about Clemson and OSU for now, this stat is huge against UGA.

They are pretty bad in the 3 and out category.

Yeah, after they get off the field 6 times and we’re up by 35, I’m sure I’d let my foot off the gas too.

Man that is really shocking. Watching the games I would not think we were that good on third down. It seems like almost every third and long was converted on us this year except in the A&M game...

I have felt the exact same way, it seemed like if it was a third and 10+ yards opposing teams were always converting

The 3rd and 19 in the 4th Quarter against Bama was just wilting. I couldn't believe that shite!

It seems that way but then you realize that we don't get 2-3 touchdown leads by magic.

Pretty sure LSU set or came close to the school record in 3-outs forced in the Vandy game and after the game everyone was convinced our defense was horrible.

Well, that's understandable considering we're stuck with their second string QB.

How the hell do you think we open up 20+ point leads in the 1st half in almost every game this year?

It just means we are good on the first 3rd down of a drive.

The issue with the defense all season has been a feast or famine kind of thing. If a team can manage to get a first down, it usually drives for a few more and gets points. Our stops come early in drives, with obvious exceptions for Texas at the goal line.

This is what has killed us this year.

Seemed like Ole Miss had maybe about 6-8 of these in our game at least

We are very good on third and short. Third and over 10? Not so much. Lol

Did you see the Bama game? They were three and out quite a few times. That’s how we built the 20 point lead.

Stats like this.....I wish they would just throw out all of the games against non Power5 opponents for everyone and then look at the stats on 3 and outs
