Ok thanks for clarifying. There have been some odd things like 90s numbers playing tight ends and QBs wearing 50 but at least it’s not the Wild West.

It’s definitely not as strict as the NFL, but you still can’t go downfield on passing downs without an eligible number. If a TE in college is wearing 50, he has to report as eligible otherwise he’s basically a third tackle. Also, at least 5 players have to be on the line of scrimmage wearing ineligible numbers (50-79) or it’s an illegal formation.

The NCAA “strongly recommends” a more formal numbering system - 50’s for centers, 60’s for guards, 70’s for tackles, 80-99 for ends, and 1-49 for backs - but they don’t enforce it because D1 teams have pretty large rosters.

The NFL can enforce a much stricter numbers policy because teams only have a 53 man roster. However, even the NFL policy has been relaxed in recent years.

Giving it to an offensive lineman is a genius move by Kelly

That was genius and rebranding it as the best player from Louisiana was also genius. Gives it an importance beyond “look at me”.

Let's be real it's just a patch it's dumb. I bet no one wanted the 7 jersey pressure.

And may pay some dividends with recruiting offensive linemen

Nope, I bet he will enjoy being the guy although a lineman deserves a big arse patch instead of a 3" mini.

#7 imo is deserving of the most explosive and game changing player on the team. The guy who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. Bk wanted to give the O line some love. I understand he believes a good O line is the foundation of a good team. I don't believe it was the right fit for #7.

DJ Chark Jacoby Stevens Derek Stingley It’s a myth that all #7s suck

This one really hurts your argument considering he played like 2 games with #7 and never played for LSU again. If you’re gonna try to use Stingley as an example that #7 hasn’t lost its shine then why not throw in Chase who never even played a game with the number?
