Losing DBs to flips and missing top DB recruiting targets isn’t a recruiting problem

It’s a development problem. Ondre Evans said as much in his reasoning for flipping to UGA.

It would be wise for BK to listen to recruits who give these reasons publicly. Evans said he’s going to UGA because he knows they will give him the best development, a tacit implication that LSU won’t.

Cooks/Steeples have no track record of developing DBs unlike our previous staffs over the last 15-20 years. They haven’t even been able to get a certain 5 star prepared to play.

We have to bring in DB coaches who don’t just recruit, but actually have a proven track record of developing them. Otherwise, 4-5* recruits will keep going to programs that have a better record of putting them in the NFL. Unfortunately that’s not LSU anymore.

Dude, He got paid better. That’s it. These statements about being developed are just dumb kids saying dumb stuff because they have to say something.

There's no way Steeples and Cooks return next year.

Their coaching isn't up to par and they're blowing it with recruiting.

So we are paying offensive recruits but not DBs? Because our offensive player recruiting is elite.

Instant money isn’t everything to every player or DB.

Eh, I’m not gonna say it was 100% money or 100% development, but I don’t think it’s exactly a stretch to say we should be putting feelers out for DB coaches.

The top ranked cb in the state this year we “missed” is waaayyyyyy overrated. Seen him play multiple times since his sophomore year. Maybe they are finally evaluating talent not following the media ratings who only see highlights.

Must be nice to have this built in excuse every time you get your arse handed to you in recruiting.

Steeples has been a bust, period. Cooks not much better. They aren't recruiting well enough AND they're not developing well enough.

This is cope.

The new LSU excuse is anyone we lose in recruiting is because we are poor. Not BK’s deficient staff.

Two no name dudes?

One was first team all conference in the Big 12 and the other led LSU in interceptions before Cooks or Steeples got here.

Safety recruiting has been pretty good, just haven't had a chance to get them on the field yet

Javien Toviano
Kylin Jackson
Ryan Yaites
Dashawn McBryde
Joel Rogers

I’m ready to move on from them but this is disingenuous. You can’t judge those guys based on the 2022 HS class, and Stamps/Yaites/Toviano/Jackson are all true freshmen who could very well turn out to be great players for us.

There is enough to be upset about with the product on the field this year without resorting to hyperbole.

I’m not 100% out on Cooks, but at the very least Steeples has to go because we have zero high level CB recruits. We just lost our only one.

And none of our WR recruits (including Bussey) are gonna be willing to play CB under Steeples.

Hire Chevis Jackson from Marshall. Hell, I almost hope Matthieu retires soon from the NFL because he’d be a hell of a CB coach at LSU.

Toviano has barely touched the field as a high 4* on a defense with more DB issues than sports illustrated. That doesn't strike you as weird?

But yaites, who was rated way lower has and has made an impact

Just shows me even more why I don’t get worked up over rankings

Cordale flott and Jay ward were both ranked as low 3 stars and sage Ryan was supposedly a can’t miss db

Looked how that turned out

I hardly ever agree with you, but it’s a good point you make here. Toviano is one of the highest rated safety recruits we’ve had in a while. Almost all coaches would love to have that guy, even as a freshman.

Weird? Not really. True freshman impact players are the exception, not the rule. On top of that we don’t have nearly the roster issues at safety that we do at cornerback.

Larger point is that I’m not going to judge a player’s development by his production (or lack thereof) 8 games into his true freshman season.

But again I think there’s enough poor DB play among the guys who are on the field to say we need to be looking at the DB coaches this off-season.
