My family and I have started a “bucket list” of college football stadiums that we want to visit and of course, Death Valley is on that list. This will our first time to LSU and will be staying in New Orleans before and after the game. I had a few questions that I wanted to ask.

Will the first game over Labor Day weekend be a night game?

Where in the stadium would be the best seats? It will be my wife, two boys ages 11 & 12 and myself.

Anything you would recommenced as a must we need to see and we are always open to suggestions for great places to eat, especially BBQ!

Thanks in advance.

First game will be at night but you can do better than Georgia southern. Wait until later in the season

It very well could be, being that it's against GA Southern and likely not televised. But it's definitely not a guarantee that it will be a night game.

There are some decent BBQ places between NOLA/BR, but I'd recommend you enjoy the seafood while you're in LA. It's not necessarily a state known for its BBQ.

Every single LSU football game is televised. The Georgia Southern game will be no different.

I would try and wait and come to a better game than that.
Please know that it will be hot as all hell for that first game.

Also know what you are getting into by trying to get back to Nola after a night game. It's a mess getting off the LSU campus and onto the interstate.

Wrong choice for this area.

I meant it wouldn't be one of the nationally televised games that CBS picks up and screws us with a 2:30 kickoff.

Yeah the game will definitely be televised and I think it’s pretty much guaranteed to be a night game. No way they do a daytime kickoff in early September for a crappy game.

Now addressing the OP, if you want good BBQ, CouYons in Port Allen is my personal favorite, and I believe there are talks of them opening up a second location in BR not far from campus.

First step - find a time machine. A game at Tiger Stadium is no longer bucket list worthy. Maybe the new AD can change that.

You obviously haven't done much homework yet. BBQ is not a Louisiana thing.

Driving to BR from New Orleans and back for a game can be a nightmare. You'll need to come very early and it will be late and long leaving the stadium. You'd be better off spending the night in BR and driving back to New Orleans the next morning.

Post this question on the Food & Drink Board. BBQ is not a specialty of the area.

How long will you be in New Orleans? There are plenty of great restaurants, there, obviously.

Hi Huffnagel!
I would expect a night game that weekend, since it’s not a marquee game. And I’m not sure where you are from, but plan to be hot during their pregame festivities. LSU will publish Times if Interest during game week, and there are lots of cool things to do/see. The team coming down Victory Hill was one of my kids favorites at their first game. And of course you can’t miss Mike, our live tiger, in his habitat between the stadium and basketball arena. I think you’ll want to get into the stadium for all of the pregame too- when the band takes the field it is just awesome.

If it were my first trip to Cajun country, I’d not be looking for BBQ, personally. I’d suggest trying boudin balls, jambalaya, and red beans and rice, but there is so much good food. The Chimes is a super fun place with plenty of Cajun favorites right outside campus, and there is also the flagship Walk-Ons with great sports bar food. My kids loved going to Chick-fil-a in the union, go figure. As far as where to sit, if you can get in the lower bowl that is better atmosphere. We like the south end zone. It’s pretty far from the student section for tender young ears.

I’m not sure why you would stay in New Orleans unless this is part of a longer trip, there are plenty of good places in BR. Just be prepared that it could be a late night of driving if it’s a night game and you stay until the end. If you get outside the immediate campus area you can usually get decent prices and no 2-night minimums. We used to always stay at the Hyatt Place on Bluebonnet.

That’s all I can think of- I hope your family has an awesome trip!

I would try to go to an SEC game to get the full experience, plus its way too hot for the first game. There’s really not a bad seat in DV outside of the top of the nosebleed sections. As some have said, you shouldn’t look for BBQ here. If you’re in Baton Rouge or New Orleans, seafood is what you want.

The earliest game in the season I would make the trip for would be Florida on October 12th. I would definitely avoid the upper deck level seating if all possible. I havent been up there in over a decade but 1 time was enough for me. One false step and you will taken a mighty tumble. Sitting next to the student section would probably be a bad decision unless youre looking to add a few more derogatory words and phrases to your sons' vocabulary. Well honestly they will hear those kind of things all over the stadium. Who am i kidding? Getting back to New Orleans after the game will take a while. Traffic is normally insane. I cant really advise you on where to eat in BR as i havent lived there in a while. Raul's used to be a solid cheap spot on Highland for burgers and philly cheesesteaks. Its probably still there. In New Orleans id suggest Neyow's Creole Cafe or Acme Oyster house in Metairie for affordable but good Seafood. If youre looking to spend a little money then you cant go wrong with GW Fins, Herbsaint, The Redfish Grille, Delmonico, Brightsens, Clancy's..... I could go on but id suggest checking out out this link. most of the places on this list are pretty damn good. LINK

If you want BBQ in Nola try The Joint.
I hope you are your family have a great trip.

First of all welcome. Although thats not a great game to go to at least its the home opener so it could be fun. I would highly recommend a different game if you can. At least an SEC game. The game will be a night game most likely. As far as tickets I should have 4 available in the south endzone for that game if you are interested. If not you can find plenty of tickets. Get lower bowl for sure. As you get closer tot he game chat with people on here. There are plenty of tailgates that welcome first timers.

That list of restaurants is not a ranking system of 1-38. Its just listing the 38 restaurants. I dont want you thinking Ba Mein family restaurant is the best place in the city. I cant say its not, but i cant say it is either.
