There's no rule against hiring a kid's family member.

Stop being dumb. If you hire a HS coach (which Surtain Sr. is for one of the best HS in the country) you can't recruit anyone from that school for the following 2 years.

People on the recruiting board say this only applies if it’s an off field position. If he’s hired to coach on the field, it’s fine.

That rule only applies to shadow staff. You can hire a coach related to a recruit if you give him an on-field position.

Surtain explained the interview to Bama’s Rivals site:

“I met with all the people in the office, I met with Coach Saban and his staff. It was actually a great experience for him to even consider me,” Surtain said told BamaInsider.com. “To be a DB coach at Alabama would be a tremendous honor. Eventually it may happen, but I guess it wasn’t the right time.”

its smart. Hell, Kansas hired Danny Manning's father 30 years ago to get Manning to commit there. He won them a national championship.

Surtain Sr would make an excellent DB coach, if Raymond were to ever leave, LSU should hire him. But it's clear Saban was after his son and wasn't gonna get him so he backed off him. Dude was a great CB in the pros for years and knows what and how to coach up youngsters into being great DB's, he would have to work on his recruiting game like all coaches new to the college game, but I think he would be good at it.
