Stanley was a LOT more polished than Shaq. He battled weight and I think was lazy if I remember correctly. He had a nice soft shot. Shaq was a skinny mofo

couldn't win the conference with a roster that included Chris Jackson, Shaq, Stanley Roberts, Vernel Singleton, Wayne Sims, and other good role players. Lost in 1st round of the SEC tourney and lost in the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney.

Come to whatever conclusion you want about the coaching of that team.

This. Possibly the greatest college team ever and he loses in the 2nd round.

For those that were able to see Stanley play, was he as naturally talented as advertised?
Yes. Stanley was the prized recruit. He had a ton of moves, he shot with range, and he was huge-framed (way bigger than guys like Ewing or Sampson, or Olajuwon. In theory, he could have been a bigger, stronger Olajuwon, an unstoppable force down low. He absolutely didn't do any work to reach that.

Shaq was a gigantic raw athlete, that coach K said he would have redshirted. He was about the same size, but otherwise the polar opposite. Stanley did everything better than him at first (except blocks, Stanley would reach over while Shaq would go straight up), but while Stanley wasted everything, Shaq worked at everything.

I looked up Stan's stats here at LSU, he averaged 14.1 pts and 9.8 rebounds a game his only season. He did this while averaging 26 minutes, on a team where Chris Jackson was still the first option (averaged 30 pts). If you figure on him playing a full 40, the averages project to 21 and 14, or about the same as what Ben Simmons is doing now (and Simmons averages about 36 mins a game). Keep in mind Stanley was competing with Shaq for rebounds, as well as players like Vernel Singleton, Wayne Sims and the Boudreaux brothers (both 6'9), while Simmons is competing only with Victor for rebounds now, and is often the first option in the attack.

Solid post, and a great testament to Shaq's work ethic.

In his book, Shaq said that Roberts was more talented than he was, but was just lazy, hated practice

Which is funny because that is what happened to Shaq in his NBA career

You don't win 4 nba titles from being lazy! Shaq was the man In LA. Only knock on shaqs game is he left about 5000 points on missed free throws on the board.

The Dream Team. I remember them very well. I was a freshmen the same year as Shaq. Very fun to watch but did not go as far in the postseason as they should of. The phrase I remember most from that year - "Chris Jackson........for threeeeeeee". Great memories as the football sucked back in '89.

Exactly why was he competing with a player from USL for rebounds....

forgot that just one came here.

The point still remains; Stanley was a beast in the time he played here. He had every physical tool Shaq had, and was a lot more skilled. They played him at forward a lot while Shaq stayed at center, because he could actually move and shoot decently. If he had Shaq's work ethic, he would have been the better player.

This is a typical uninformed complaint from people who didn't follow basketball at the time. The fact is that Shaquille was an athletic, promising young player, but was often in foul trouble and still developing his offensive game. Stanley was a redshirt freshman with more offensive skills than Shaquille that year, but it was both players first year playing college basketball. During this era, the dominant teams were loaded with seasoned talent who had played together for several years. Super stars didn't jump to the NBA after just one year. This team lost early in the Tournament because they were young and inexperienced compared to many other top teams. Had this team stuck together and still lost, the criticism would be valid. But for that team, it just shows you didn't follow college basketball.

They all couldn't get on the court the same time ,some was seniors, sopfs jrs ,freshmen you can't just lump their names together and get a national championship !

They were indeed on the same UCLA team, but Nader was generally Walton's backup.

As dominating as Shaq and Roberts were down low on offense, we were weak on perimeter defense when they were in the game together. Georgia Tech exposed this weakness in LSU's second round NCAA loss. The problem is, how can you sit someone like Shaq or Stanley for someone like Sims or Boudreaux?

say what? So seniors can't play with freshman? WTF?

Shaq and Stanley inside, Vernell at forward and Jackson at one of the guard spots. That's not lumping anybody together, that's 4 of them on the court together in a legit lineup.

Georgia tech was also loaded with NBA talent as well.... everyone overlooks that part for some reason.
