Let’s have a real, non-hyperbolic, talk about the defense

Some of these topics are absurd. Worst front 7 in 25 years, Delpit is trash, Chaisson is trash, etc,

Look none of that is true. The defense was certainly abysmal last night and Delpit had one of the worst single game performances I’ve ever seen from a guy who is supposed to be one of our better defenders - but we’re also a week removed from one half of a road game shutting down an all time great CFB offense with 7 potential 1st rounders. So the sky isn’t falling but at the same time, there are serious issues.

Let’s start with the DL. It is what it is. They are really good against the run. Shelvin is a problem for offenses and can blow up run plays by himself. Lawrence and Logan are good at eating up blocks as well, and we have good depth with Fehoko and Ika. I know Chaisson isn’t a DL but he’s playing at the LOS enough to effectively be one. He has been an absolute force setting the edge against the run, last night he damned. On the flip side, we don’t have pass rushers. Chaisson is our best and frankly he isn’t getting it done there. We can’t rely on any of our defenders to win one on ones consistently in pass rush situations and will need to be creative with blitzes if we want pressure.

The LB core is good. Queen, Phillips, Clark all have been good IMO. We don’t have a game breaker there like Devin White, but not many teams do.

At DB, Stingley and Fulton make for one of the best CB tandems in LSU history. They have been the strongest and most consistent part of this defense. Nickel back is a glaring hole. Vincent has shown flashes at times, I think he’s our best chance to get some consistency there for this season - Flott or award just don’t appear ready. At Safety, Stevens is a great versatile piece. He will give up some plays in coverage, but he is also a playmaker. Delpit is great in coverage. On the flip side, his run support and tackling have been an F this season. I also think the injury is effecting him more than we know - there’s no other way to explain such a drastic decline from last year.

Overall, we’re gonna give up more points and yards than we’re used to seeing with LSU. Part of that is because of the above issues, part is because teams will play ultra aggressive against us to keep up with the offense. Our goal on defense should be big plays and critical stops. We might give up 400-500 yards but if we generate a few turnovers, some stops in critical moments - with our offense, that’s a success and what we should measure them by. And last night aside, they’ve pretty much done that all year long.

I think the issue is not from the neck-down but from the neck-up. Something is holding this Defense back. Is there a psychiatrist in the house??

Too many words... This defense is weak and we don’t have the talent to fix it.

I agree with everything you said expect Delpit is not great in coverage. He is great playing near the LOS. Since we dont have a real FS he gets stuck back there by necessity.
Besides our DL not getting off blocks our biggest issue is not having a pure FS. Everyone hated John Battle last year and didn’t understand why Aranda kept playing him, but he was a smart player who saved us a lot of big plays.

The important thing, imo, is making the critical and timely stops in a given game. That’s more important than bare statistics like yds gained.

I think Flott has played pretty well for a true freshman, but I agree with most of what you said.

Correct, Delpit needs to be up close coming off the edge and gap blitzing, he can’t play back and make open field tackles like a SAFEty is supposed to

Agree on many points. I think the defense lost focus when they jumped out to a big lead, did the same against Bama last week. Delpit is having issues with his ankle, you could see when he tried to make lateral moves last nite. There is still a huge problem with tackling and not wrapping up. I think that’s the biggest issue on this defense. I saw several whiffs on Plumlee but give him credit also. He s going to be an issue for several years. Tigers are still a fantastically talented team with a shot to win it all

The defense is really bad. Our offense is exceptionally great and that makes up for it. Without Joe we would not be 10-0.

It doesn’t hurt to put Aranda on the hot seat. He gets paid enough to handle it. We will need this defense to be much better next year.

Everything is fixable. Blown assignments, poor tackling.

It's just a bit surprising it occurred in game 10.

Hopefully it was a wake up call.

They just gave up 400 yards of rushing. 200+ to an 18 year old QB who can’t throw the ball.

Justin Jefferson credited with 1 solo tackle - which was more than 6 defensive starters (Chaisson and Stingley, each credited with 1 assist, bottom of page) and Brooks.

Last week Aranda did some questionable things. This coming week that Defensive Stat sheet should rightly be a topic of focus.

If they are all banged up and no depth understandable - but fair to question.

DL Coach needs to seek employment elsewhere. LB Coach isnt much better.

And in the SECOND HALF last week.

People ready to shut everything down because the defense gives up more yardage than we're used to. The big plays by Ole Miss were just that - big plays. Sure it was record setting, which often happens when something is working and you're playing from behind. It isn't all out of proportion to what Ole Miss did to Alabama, for example, which is the "Gold Standard" of SEC programs for over a decade.

Injuries, focus, distractions, attrition - these are all issues with which this team is dealing.

You play...to win...the game. We won. 10-0. Get ready to get well against Arkansas. Efficient, mistake free football against a bad team is just what the doctor ordered to get ready for aTm and UGA.

Delpit had 2 solo tackles with plumlee and others dancing in his territory all night. Delpit is now jogging to the scene of the tackle to Occasionally pick up an assist. This is an issue and will continue to cost LSU. If that’s the way it is then so be it but it’s hard to believe The bench would be any worse than he’s been playing. I like the guy but he’s phoned it in a lot this season.

When Tampa Bay was good under Dungy Tomlin was making his bones coaching the DBs.

Tomlin preached a saying which they then hung in the DB meeting room -

If you do NOT TACKLE you WILL NOT PLAY

Last level of Defense -

In Cover 2 especially CBs Must be able to tackle - Safeties it's their primary job.

You left out some very key points here.... injuries, we have 6 starters playing with injuries and our 2 best players who are closer to 50% than 100%. Delpit is playing on will alone, he can’t run, he can’t change directions and he can’t tackle. He’s out there basically to line people up and make calls. Lawrence is also a shell of himself, every 2-3 games he’ll flash his old self for a series or two but he is also out there on mostly heart alone. All 3 corners are nicked up as well, Stingley hasn’t been close to the same since taking those two hits vs Florida, Fulton has been incredible on 1 leg and Vincent hasn’t played a full quarter at a time in 3 weeks. It’s not just that our top 4 players are hurt but they’re our leaders as well. When a young kid sees a leader make an incredible play it can ignite that young players best self and lift his play but we’ve been robbed of that. The other point is I think you’ve overestimated our LB play, they’re an average group without a stand out player. Phillips and Clarke are good at taking on guards and moving forward vs the run but neither can run or cover very well. Queen looks like he’s got the talent but he takes bad angles mostly in coverage and has very poor tackling technique.
