He didn't give up a ton of walks at Nicholls.
It would be one thing if he was getting shelled in the SEC, but he's throwing the same size baseball against the same size strike zone at LSU that he did at Harvard on the Bayou.
What has happend to him this year is very curious.

He averaged just under a walk an inning at Nichols. That is a ton of walks. If you include hit batters he’s over a walk an inning

You couldn't be more wrong . The reason everyone was cautious with saying that he would contribute ,when we found out he signed, was because he walked a ton of batters last year and wasn't much better the year before.
He was setting records for walks at nichols..he probably has walked more batters per inning than anyone in the country during his college career and that was mainly at nichols.
You must have gotten him confused with someone else. Dudes always been a free base giving machine with hbps and walks
For his career he's averaging 8.6 walks per nine.
Last year he gave up 81 free passes in 70 innings pitched
His freshman year he gave up a little less per inning but not much less.
He's on pace to crush those numbers this season if you go by bb/hbp per 9
The good thing is he only had an era of just over 2 his freshman year
His sophomore year he had a 5.4 era
So far this year he had a similar era

If he can’t do it in bullpen sessions or practice then why in the world try it in a game?

Couldnt be more off here
No he didnt give 14 free passes to get 18 outs like this season so far, but he walked 76 and hit another 5 (that's 81 free passes) in just 70.2 IP last season. That is already very high, this season he's reached a new level of bad there. He's just gotten continually worse with his control in his college career, flat out.
2023 = 58 BB, 5 HBP in 75.2 IP
2024 = 76 BB, 5 HBP in 70.2 IP
2025 = 12 BB, 2 HBP in 6.0 IP
Again, this is LSU, not Nicholls. We cannot and will not continually throw a guy in games who cannot throw strikes.

He gave up 9.7 BB/9 last year(walks per 9 innings).
The MLB average in 2024 was 3.1 BB/9, for reference.

Ok, I have him confused with someone else.
Why did we sign a pitcher like that??

Because the stuff is really good, and if he figured out just a little command, even walking a guy an inning almost he could get away with. The problem is he's closer to giving 3 free passes to get 3 outs right now than 1.
I didnt love the approach we took in the portal for pitchers overall. They got way too many guys with mediocre to bad command, and its showing this year. The guys with good command out of the portal we got? Cowan + Eyanson. The guys with mediocre to bad command we got out of the portal? Mayers, Dorsey, Benge, Sheerin, Fontenot.
Guess who is pitching and pitching well and who isnt pitching or is and struggling with command?
Exact same list of guys on both accounts (obviously Sheerin is injured, but besides the main point).
They need to focus on getting guys who can throw strikes first out of the portal next go around and not focus almost solely on stuff. Some of these guys are ultimately just inning eaters and thats fine, but you cant even eat innings if you cant throw strikes consistently.

Well, he has 222 career K's in 151IP.
That just comes with 146BB's lol. He was never going to be a factor here.
