the mentally challenged sponsor a "special" competition, just for him.

he once called for a spike with one second left, just to see how it felt.

he's caused more heart attacks with his coaching, than the colonel has with his chicken.

he once wore a headset to look like madonna, and he doesn't even like madonna.

I LOLed at your post, but am a nit-picker...Shep wasn't the top QB in the land. The continued insistence that we're putting the 'top' QB at receiver bugs the hell out of me. Shep was the top 'athlete' and LSU was the only school that said they'd give him a chance at QB (which is one of the main reasons we got him).

That said, funny stuff. I especially liked the 'challenges everyone mentally' one.

Rivals listed him as the #1 dual-threat QB. Look it up.

LMAO. 'Dual threat' QB is synonymous with 'running QB with a noodle for an arm'. Are you seriously...seriuolsy...saying that Shep was listed as a 'dual threat' QB because of his arm strength??? Then why the frick was he recruited as a QB by so many other schools?

OH RIGHT, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, and Tennessee all recruited him as a QB...except that they, you know, didn't.

I have serious issues with the mismanagement of Shep's talent, but anyone who insists that the dude is being misused because he's not under center is smoking something that they need to share with the rest of the Rant.

I'm just going on evidence man. Rivals and Scout are pretty solid in that regard. Show us some proof at least that nobody else recruited him as a QB and I'll take your point.

I am going by what actually happened, man.

I follow recruiting pretty heavily, and it was widely known (and part of the Shep-to-LSU lore) that the main reason we got him was because we offered him the chance to play QB. Find any highly-regarded poster you trust who is a recruiting guru, they'll tell you the same thing about his recruitment. None of the big boys (Texas especially) recruited him as QB.

Links, after a brief google search:

LINK

quote:

The only reason we were in it with Shepard is because Texas coach Mack Brown was recruiting him strictly as a wide receiver. Shepard has said he does not mind switching positions but wants to get a shot at quarterback, and will switch positions if he doesn't earn playing time at QB.

That's fine with me. Les Miles has said he's a quarterback and that's where he wants Shepard. I actually give Mack Brown some credit here. He didn't just tell Shepard what he wanted to hear. He told him the truth, which is that Texas wasn't going to give him a shot at quarterback. LSU will.

Or this https://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/fbc/5589791.html

quote:

"This is an absolute surprise," said recruiting analyst Ahmard Vital. "I thought he would have made his decision in the summer, but he feels that LSU is the perfect fit for him. He's close to home and they'll give him a chance to play quarterback.

Shepard, who will graduate early, will get a chance to compete for the Tigers' starting role with former Brenham standout Jarrett Lee. Lee will enter LSU's spring practice as the starting QB after Ryan Perriloux was suspended from the program last month.

"Russell doesn't mind moving to another position," said Vital, "but he wanted to go to a school that was willing to give him a shot to play quarterback."

A school that was 'willing' to 'give him a shot to play quarterback'. Think about it. When's the last time a true QB prospect had that written about him?

This https://boardreader.com/thread/QB_Russell_Shepard_question_a65sX1j84.html from tide fans or some such Bama board.

quote:

Thanks fellas, that's what I needed. Had a debate on another board with an LSU fan who was claiming AJ was overrated and a "project". I just found it amusing that Shepard is actually a much bigger project at the QB position than AJ--by a long shot. I'm guessing Shepard will end up at WR or DB before his days are over in Red Stick.

https://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/longhorns/entries/2008/02/10/shepard_gets_of.html

quote:

The Longhorns already have a quarterback commit in five-star signal caller Garrett Gilbert, who led Lake Travis to the Class 4A Division I state championship. Gilbert’s commit changed things for Shepard

“Coach (Mack) Brown said Russell, ‘We really love you and we want to go to school here, but it’s a weird situation with all the quarterbacks,’” Shepard said. “He let me know it’s kind of weird bringing in two highly rated quarterbacks.”

As I said, if that's not enough, do a little research on your own, or better yet, ask a poster into recruiting that you trust...I'm not making this shite up.

He should still get the shot to play quarterback. That includes next year. Give him a play if possible (and necessary) in the next two, definitely a series or two against ULM.
