This thread is stupid.
Miles didn't make the call, Gary Crowton did. He sat up in the box and saw the LBs getting too close to the LOS and called a low risk pass to his best WR.
Game, set, match /thread.
Go obsess about Miles somewhere else, fricktard.

Well, let's consider this scenario - what if Miles had called 3 safe plays to set up the FG and Colt David missed it or had it blocked? All you'd be hearing is why did Miles play safe and not play to win the game? Bama fans would ask the same thing were it to happen to Saban.
While you expect to come away with points when you're down in (or near) the Red Zone, you never assume anything.
Thank you. You never go to the fg option until you have to. If you miss it, game over, and David had already missed one fg. But as long as you're on O and moving the ball like LSU was and in the red zone, you try to get closer and maybe even score a TD. If not, then you go to the fg. Its about keeping your options open as long as possible.
Les did not defy the odds, he worked them to his advantage, but that's apparently beyond the comprehension of some on here.

I have a degree in finance and I understand statistics on a basic level at least, this shite is supposed to even out eventually.
this quote shows you know nothing about athletics, we are not drawing numbers out of a hat, we are talking about football.
We had 8 in the box, our best receiver in one on one, an easy pitch and catch.....shite it wasnt even thrown perfectly and was not even close to being picked.
Worst thing that happens is an incomplete pass, which leaves AU a timeout, best thing is to win the game
You keep punching in on that calculator, and we will keep winning football games.

+1
Games aren't decided by statistics, they are decided by players making plays.

Why? Because we have a good kicker too and would run the ball out with a much much lower risk of not scoring?
Look Mr. Finance degree. Get a job in the actuarial department at Mutual of Omaha and stop coming on our board with weak complaints about our damn strong football team. I suffered thru years of 3 downs and punt. Hell we were lucky to have the opportunity to even kick a field goal.
Now that we can beat any team in the country on a given night you have a problem with LSU. Just admit that your worried about Les doing the same thing to Bama. And you should be because he will.

Ah.......... so good to be back.
Like a breath of fresh air. Thanks to all for the support. To the miserables, I could not get to
Metarie and was given a well deserved vacation from the site.
But I see not much has changed.....

Lucky Les again in disbelief, with a good shot in by Baloo:

This wasn't a crazy call, and the fact it is even being considered as such speaks more to the ultra conservative nature of coaches than about Miles. When in doubt, never rely on a kicker. Let's repeat that: NEVER RELY ON A KICKER.
---------------------------------------------------
I second that motion. People who know football
realize this. They also will know these tidbits.
First, there was a safety lined up on Lafell, and Crowton knew that. Just like Tubby exposed Mac on Auburn's last TD, Miles gave Crowton the ok to expose Auburn. Lee was instructed how to throw the ball. He did what he was told. LaFell the rest.
Lucky, it's this simple: Lee is a college QB. When it counts, he has the weapons and coaches to make the big play. He is expected to make a proper 7 yard out throw, unlike a Casey Dick at Arkansas.
Lee made the throw, played lights out when it counted, and Miles may have set his young QBs' confidence for the rest of his playing career.
You can play to win (Miles) or not to lose (Saban).
One last time.
Miles leads the SEC in 4th down conversions. He also led the Big 12 as well while he was at OkST.
His on side kick call was a stroke of genius, and even though we got nothing on that drive, it showed how sly he is. BTW did anyone see Miles after that series? He pulled Lee to the sideline and advised him to slow it down when he came off the field after that series, and gave him the headset. Crowton then got on the hooter, told him what to do.... and Lee then ripped Auburn to shreds.
It's not luck, Lucky Les.
Its completely planned, and it's why Les Miles is simply a better coach than you'll ever give him credit for. It's why Gary Crowton will always be twice the offensve coordinator Bama ever has, and why LSU will continue to be the best team in the SEC West.
On the other hand, Arkansas tore your vaunted defense to shreads in the first half-- 238 yards in the first half, went up and down the field on your overrated teams' arse but thanks to two stupid QB errors returned for TDs and POOR goal line play calling , they were down 35-7 at the half.
That's bad coaching.
And here's the difference. When LSU has 253 yards in the first half, they would be mauling your beloved Tide.
And when LSU hammers Bama in November, wins the West (for the third time in four years) and Les once again outrecruits Nick Saban for the second time in three years, you'll probably be asking yourself these two questions:
1) Where would Bama be with Les Miles as our coach; and
2) Why is BT and LSU simply better than Lucky and Bama?
quote:
-----------------------------------------------
If you play for a field goal, especially in college, you are asking to lose. when did field goals become automatic? Almost every criticism of Miles' call assumes that LSU hits the field goal. Which isn't a sure thing.
Secondly, the basic premise of offensive theory is to put the ball where they ain't. Auburn was stacking the middle and playing for the rush. So LSU threw the ball to the outside. It was a percentage play due to the defensive look. It wasn't risky, it was exploiting the defense, and the conservative nature of coaches.
Finally, the players love it. Miles' greatest virtue is how he manages his players, and they like the idea they are playing to win. It's exciting. He shows faith in his players, and they work hard to reward that faith.
Miles isn't a crazy gambler, he's just the only coach who isn't paralized by risk.
GREAT POST BALOO.

No, but for whatever reason they do it the most vehemently and the most consistently.
Just as LSU fans won't shut the hell up about Nick at Bama, Alabama fans won't shut the hell up about Les in lieu of proving that Saban is SOOOOO much better than him.
Bottom line: Both great coaches, both different styles.

Les still coaches the game like an old school college coach. Coach to WIN.
Not like those NFL coaches who are now infecting college ball with their conservative " Coach not to lose" attitudes.
That onside kick, gutsy as hell, (even if no points came from it) it showed that we were gonna win the game or die trying.

I'm still trying to figure out just why in the hell this jackass even started this thread. May have something to do with the fact that 'Bama just assumed that the logic of winning with Saban's recruits (ludicrous as that is) would prove true and that 'Bama/Saban would ascend to the throne by default. Now, it is starting to look like the realization has set in that hey, maybe this Miles guy can coach and 'Bama is again relegated to taking a window seat on the "oh shite" bus.

The funny part about it all is that had Saban or Meyer made that same call....it would be hailed as ingenious. Cause theyre "smart" guys.

How is that? Like you said LSU was running at will and had 3 more downs to get another 1st. Makes no sense.
