It's not Miles so much as it's Crowton. :People continually make it about "Miles is a dummy, he's a genius, etc.". but it's Crowton's game plans that win the games.

I'm sure some of Miles' decisions don't make much sense in the coaching circles. I've seen many games and can't recall where the coach don't run the ball, put the ball in the middle of the field, run the clock down, then kick the field goal.

IDK, maybe Miles don't like putting the game in the hands of a kicker. Or maybe he understands the opposing coach knows what he is going to do, so he takes advantage of an opportunity. Maybe it's Crowton's influence and supreme confidence in him.

It is definitely outside the norm, but it's working. Maybe it'll become the norm when other coaches grow a pair of balls and stop losing games on missed FGs. Or maybe it'll just be known as Miles Ball.

Whatever it is, it isn't dull in Tigertown.

Coach Les Miles knows his team and has faith in them, therefore the team believes in itself in any situation. It's called COACHING, not finance and statistics Gump Boi

Then why don't we see too many college and pro coaches doing it in that situation? Are they just too stubborn to change?

Are you really that ignorant???

some may not have the talent to get away with it, some don't have the balls, some don't play to win, some play too much according to the percentages...many get fired every year for playing it by the book

bottom line, we wouldn't have won the BCS last year had our staff played according to "the book"

Stick to accounting; statistics or whatever it is, because obvious you know very little about football genius.

Well, let's consider this scenario - what if Miles had called 3 safe plays to set up the FG and Colt David missed it or had it blocked? All you'd be hearing is why did Miles play safe and not play to win the game? Bama fans would ask the same thing were it to happen to Saban.

While you expect to come away with points when you're down in (or near) the Red Zone, you never assume anything.

It's very simple. Les trusts his players to make plays in critical situations. The guy you have has never done that and he never will. Get used to it.

Haha, why move this to the tiger rant? It would've been better just to lock it.

Just because the average coach would call the game differently, it doesn't mean it's the right call. Coaches, as a group, are far too risk averse. They make decisions based to minimize criticism, not to win, sometimes.

This wasn't a crazy call, and the fact it is even being considered as such speaks more to the ultra conservative nature of coaches than about Miles. When in doubt, never rely on a kicker. Let's repeat that: NEVER RELY ON A KICKER.

If you play for a field goal, especially in college, you are asking to lose. when did field goals become automatic? Almost every criticism of Miles' call assumes that LSU hits the field goal. Which isn't a sure thing.

Secondly, the basic premise of offensive theory is to put the ball where they ain't. Auburn was stacking the middle and playing for the rush. So LSU threw the ball to the outside. It was a percentage play due to the defensive look. It wasn't risky, it was exploiting the defense, and the conservative nature of coaches.

Finally, the players love it. Miles' greatest virtue is how he manages his players, and they like the idea they are playing to win. It's exciting. He shows faith in his players, and they work hard to reward that faith.

Miles isn't a crazy gambler, he's just the only coach who isn't paralized by risk.

I think if you run Scott 3 times, you aren't necessarily "settling" for a field goal. Guy was breaking nice runs all game long. I wouldn't have made the throw on first, not even with hindsight, but I love the call.

quote:

"If people know when they pack the box that we can throw it, then next time we get in the situation, they got to play more defense," Crowton said. "… I could see them getting closer and closer, those backers getting closer. I thought we had a good matchup, easy throw. I trusted Jarrett."

Bummer Huh?

The stuff legends are made from. I thought you would recognize those types of calls. The same types of calls that made Bryant a legend.

Mark my words, Les is an SEC legend in the making.

Oh I forgot Lucky Les, you take the short bus. Recognizing someone who acts like the Bear is hard for you, especially when they are on the other sidelines.
