Of course you expect him to make it but it's not a guarantee. That's the point you apparently cannot grasp that Les Miles has. You try to score the touchdown every time and only attempt the field goal when you have no other choice.

You do know that if we had gotten it on 3rd down there we would most likely run the next 3 downs, kill the clock, and still kick the FG? Had we gotten the 1st down, the smart play is still to run the clock out and I'm almost positive that's what Payton would've done.

Our coaching staff played it safe in the first half and it got us nowhere. They pulled out the stops in the second half and we got the win. If Les had followed conventional coaching wisdom, especially after Lee was forced back into the game, we would have lost by at least 10 points and this entire discussion would never have taken place.

Check the Les Miles stat thread that is stickied on this board. There is NOTHING in those numbers that have anything to do with luck.

You're on the other team's 20 yardline. There's 1 minute left on the clock. You're down by 1 point. You've been running it on them to get it to their 20. You have an inexperienced QB.

There's still a minute left.

You're inexperienced QB has made some great throws under pressure.

The defense is off guard.

You're aready in field goal range.

You have balls.

You're not an average coach coaching an average team with average, delusional fans.

And run the same risk of a bad snap, hold, shank, or blocked kick. Ask Tony Romo/Dallas about those gimme field goals. Wasn't that spot inside the 10 yard line??? They could have just as easily run clock by throwing quick short passes, like, I dunno, a 7 yard out, and if one of them happened to result in a TD, then Denver has to score a TD with less than 2 minutes and no time outs. As it was, even if he makes the kick, they only needed a FG and had almost 2 minutes to get in position to get it. That's what conservative gets you. You're just too stubborn to admit it. Have a nice night.

There is another fact you need to keep in mind here. Miles' first big game in Tiger Stadium, which came at a tumultuous time in the state's history, was lost because he played not to lose in the second half. The fans ate him alive for it and he took it and admitted his fault. Just consider it a lesson learned well. He has not made the same mistake since. Even in last year's UK game, while he ran it with Hester at the end, he was just sticking with what worked the week before and what had been working during that drive. It is the only time his gutsy decisions haven't worked out.

One of the more underappreciated marks of Miles’ teams is their chemistry. Les does a great job of developing team chemistry and by all indications much better than Nick. Consider how many players left early for the draft with Nick (and that pre-maturely in many cases): Trev Faulk, Josh Reed, Michael Clayton, Marquise Hill, Matt Mauck (others?). In fact, under Nick the only player I recall who could’ve left early but stayed for their senior season was Marcus Spears (maybe Corey Webster). Now consider how many players have stayed with Les who could have left early (Kirston Pittman, Dorsey, Laron Landry, Doucet (others?) Tyson Jackson. Is JaMarcus (and who could fault him as the #1 pick) the only player to have left school early under Les?

who would've thought les miles is a better end of game coach than sean payton....they started off in opposite directions and payton has gone conservative and predictable and miles savvy and unpredictable

Where that pass was thrown, there were only 2 things that could happen: completion, to get closer to the goal line, with plenty of time left, or incomplete. It was thrown outside and low, and LaFell had to go down to field it. He just made a great play. If he's tackled, or it falls incomplete, there's still more than enough time to move the ball to the middle of the field and kick the FG.

don't know if it was on tv but Miles was like a kid in a candy store waiting to get on the field pre-game, laughing, jumping around and messin with the team.THAT kind of raport with his charges is wonderful to see. They seem to be a real band of men, not a bunch of prima donnas, head coach included.
