of the recently successful college coaches jumping to NFL, each have had NFL ties:

Jim Harbaugh

Before coaching the 49er's, Harbaugh never coached in the NFL.

Les Miles did spend 3 years as an assistant with the Cowboys.

Harbaugh did spend 14 years as a QB in the NFL and his brother is a head coach in the NFL.

I forgot about Les's gig with the Cowboys.

That's just silly. Your personal vendetta against tiger fans is more important than LSU?

who cares what his brother does. He had no NFL coaching expirience before taking the 49er's gig.

I don't think Les will leave.

There are two totally different subjects here:

1) Will anyone in the NFL want to hire Les to be their coach? After January 9th, I think yes.

2) Does he want to coach in the NFL? I don't know. I hope he feels like BR is home and college is more fun than the NFL. However, it is hard to believe that a great competitor will not at least contemplate to trying to win on the biggest stage with the best coaches. FWIW I don't think he will leave for money/control reasons.

Les Miles: He's already won a National Title at LSU and is playing for another in a couple of weeks. Miles, who has connections to Dolphins owner Steve Ross through their University of Michigan ties, is probably looking to make a Pete Carroll style jump to the NFL considering the NCAA is investigating his program and sanctions could be on their way.

I don't know much, but the NFL doesn't seem to fit Les's personality. The expectations placed on an NFL head coach translate to an Andy Reid type of 24 hour/day commitment. Not that Les isn't totally committed and capable, its that his family, among other things, seems to be too important to him to jeopardize. The LSU scene allows for a little more breathing room than an NFL job.

Paradoxically, Nick's fail in the NFL might be a major warning sign to Les, so Nick will have done us a big favor.

After winning the BCSNCG he'll be making $5 mil+ per year. He'll probably win the NCG 2 out of the next 3 years and by the time he retires, he'll be thought of as one of the best SEC and NCAA football coaches in history, an LSU legend, and Hall of Fame Material. No way he leaves.

That may not be what he's looking for. Think about it. Nick made the jump to the NFL and failed miserably. Now one way for Les to show he's better than Nick is to win in the NFL.

Don't forget that Les has coached in the NFL and the NFL is the top football league and winning in the NFL would be the ultimate challange.

If the money is right I wouldn't blame Les for leaving. I wouldn't be happy about it, but I wouldn't blame him. Some guys get tired of begging 17 year olds to play football for them and the occasional babysitting that goes with college football.

That's not really true anymore. If anything you don't have to go to players homes and games for recruiting and you don't have to do any alumni functions or so on. You have larger coaching staffs and scouts and support personal in the NFL that you don't have in college. There's no worrying about grades and other things.

To win in the NFL and BCS football requires different types of time committment. The question is which type of time committment and the fact is that you don't recruit on the road and you have scouts do a good deal of talent evaluation for you.
