The 4 hour+ game-length (clock-stoppages from commercials, T.O.s, penalties/reviews, injuries, etc.) contributed to my routine of DVRing games & not starting to watch until half-time, fast-forwarding thru all the stoppages, catching up to live tv by 4th qtr 2:00 warning...

...but House was the first DC that made me fast-forward thru actual gameplay, which was every defensive series, and only watching Jayden & the offense. Games only lasted just over an (enjoyable) hour, and I never felt one ounce of frustration skipping over repeated 3rd & 21 conversions by the opponent via LSU's sorry play or penalty.

Watching Thomas Dunston try to cover Champ Bailey was a treat.
Quincy Carter: Completed 27 of 34 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 41 rushing yards and caught a 36-yard pass.

Anyone who says otherwise is simply too young to know

How in the hell is the answer to OP not Matt House?

I'm old enough to know that Tepper should not be the answer. He wasn't even the worst coordinator on the 1999 team, and Matt House was statistically worse than Tepper in their second year. Anyone saying Lou Tepper was the worst non-HC coach is basing that on their feelings and not facts.

Yes... in 1998, our defense made me want to strangle him. In 1999, we had improved significantly (check the stats before you argue). While 1999 wasn't meeting our normal standards, we had a garbage offense and the defense never left the field. He still managed to have the #42 total defense in the nation that year. In 2023, Matt House was the exact opposite. He got shittier in his second year with one of our best offenses ever.

He tanked Dinardo's career.

Kinda.
Dinardo kept Tepper and fired Mo Watts, naming Bob McConnell OC.
Lost 3 games while scoring over 30 pts in 98. Averaged 31 ppg and still went 4-7. Such a terrible season.

So to answer the OP, it’s Lou “Drop Linebacker” Tepper, by a landslide.

Good point. But McConnell was OC in name only. Dinardo promoted him so that he could continue to micromanage the offense. Bob was a patsy.

Temper and it ain’t close.
Whenever I found a copy of Ultimate Linebacker on eBay, I buy it and burn it with a gallon of gasoline.

Well I can’t really argue with House either, but I’ve never been to certain of the talent level House was working with.

Tepper had good talent and the defense was a fiasco. 1998 was the wasted year. I don’t know if it could have been a NC contender, but maybe. Tenn is one of the weakest NC winners in modern history.

To be clear, I never make excuses for Tepper. He infuriated me like no one else at the time. 1998 was bad but the 2023 defense was worst statistically. House got worse in his second year; hard to blame talent on that decline.

Tepper’s defense was not fun. But it was #42 (I think) in his second year. We’ve had more than a couple defenses since then that were ranked worse nationally. I think Pelini in 2020 was worse than Tepper’s first/worse year as well.

How many SEC quarterbacks were the SEC Offensive Player of the Week for their play against Tepper's defense?

As others have stated… it’s gotta be Lou Tepper.

But wasting Jayden Daniels meteoric rise season is beyond criminal. House has to get extraordinary blame for that as any other decent above average defense wins Natty… what a damn shame

House. With just a competent defense we likely win it all in 2023.
