Just put Thomas back there too and use him like Cordarrelle Patterson.

but Berry has put on 20 lbs since getting to campus already.

No he hasn’t. He was 183 at the end of last year. He has added weight but He still isn’t in the range he needs to be and every time Kelly is asked about him, he basically says as such. “Needs to build his armor”, “needs to get used to being hit by grown men” etc.

He’s perfectly fine as a RB3 but if he has to do more they are in trouble.

How is a poor decision of a player the fault of the coaching staff? Please enlighten me.

We needed another proven RB BEFORE the LIndsey bullshite professor.
Never mind a reply because this is worse than the first statement. I understand now.

I guess I should’ve been more clear. This doesn’t have anything to do with the Lindsey situation. I had these same thoughts before that happened, as have others.

Well- your BEST CASE selling point to any portal RB would have been to come in and compete with a 5 star freshman who we just paid a lot of money to to be the backup. At best. But we all know you could slide to 3rd and with games running shorter and our pass-heavy offense, you may not get that many reps here unless Durham goes down. That’s not bringing in a top 3 portal RB.

So yeah, we could have taken a portal back, but that likely wouldn’t have been one of the best available. One of our last portal adds was Gooden, who looks like a standout DL rotation player. Haulcy looks like a starter at S, where we needed a lot of help. When you talk about roster spots and getting bang for your buck, and then look at this year’s RB portal class…even the top guys are unproven and most would have just been placeholders.

The guys we took in the portal all look better to me in terms of need and talent than the options that were available to be a reserve RB.

Sure, I’m just saying it’s not ideal and it could be a concern. Guys like Hester have expressed this concern as well.

Well, before Lindsey's exit the #2 RB was anticipated to be Jackson or Berry.

After Lindsey's exit the #2 RB is anticipated to be Jackson or Berry.

The only thing that has really changed is Johnson now becomes the 4th option instead of Lindsey. And that's assuming he wasn't already the 4th option given he certainly wasn't the #2 QB.

You never want to lose guys due to unnecessary and stupid suspension (the suspension was necessary, the act that led to it was stupid). But I don't think the loss is as big of a deal as some are making it out to be. No roster is built to withstand a rash of 3-4 injuries at the RB spot. That includes many of LSU's prior roster where the running game was the focus of the offense.

I've already said in this exact thread that what I'm saying has nothing to do with the Lindsey situation. I've had these thoughts since before that happened. I've also responded to you saying that I don't really care who the #4 RB is and that I'm more concerned about who the #2 RB is.

Just bad roster luck. I think they will be fine as long as injuries don't go crazy. Durham Jackson Berry LSU had 26 carries (not counting QB) outside of their top three backs last season. Then you have guys like Johnson, Thomas, Brown and Anderson who can get a few touches out of the backfield.

On3 weighed him last summer 182.

Is he 202 or 192 you think?

You do realize it's possible he was less than 182 after a season of football coming here, right?

My first year of varsity football I started the summer close to 210 and finished the year close to 185.

It's possible he was around 175 coming here and is now closer to 195. He looks notably thicker, i mean thats very apparent. HE's also probably rounding some.

The point is, he is clearly not a small guy any more by any shape of the imagination. Put on a lot of good weight and quickly, kind of like a lot of us telling you thats possible in the recruiting board top LA RB thread over and over. Guys dont have to be the same size as a junior in high school once they hit college

192 is like 9% weight for a RB

He’s definitely bigger, but still small

Wut

I never once doubted his ability to gain weight. Gaining weight is easy.

Gaining the significant amount of weight needed to be an every down SEC back and maintaining the traits the make you special is the difficult part.

Backs have certainly proved they can play and handle a load in the SEC around 195. Definitely outliers but it can be done. His running style will have to change, too. All things Brian Kelly has already commented on. Not even trying to take a victory lap. I want him to be great.

Yes, Zavion was a very good running back at JOhn Ehret. He is a bit small , but he can scoot.
