Accumulate good coaches looking to rehabilitate their career on your staff as analysts or other assistant roles; then when your coordinators/assistant coaches get plucked away by other schools for head coach positions, you already have someone who can step in to fill the void pretty quickly and smoothly.

Saban did this repeatedly at Bama. One good is example is having Lane and Sark on staff at the same time in 2016. When Lane got hired away by FAU, Sark stepped right in without missing a beat.

Lane is turning into the next GOAT.

(But of course, I know there will be idiot posters on here who think they know better than Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin)

Alabama lost the national championship after Kiffin left when Sark was calling the plays. I'd say he missed a beat there.

It’s the absolute correct way to build it. You develop the pipeline of putting your oc and dc into head roles, you put the possible replacement on staff and then can just bring them up and keep doing it.

Plus you get a lot of really good fresh eyes on game planning.

I would say ending up 2nd and playing in the National Championship is rare air.

That’s a short-sighted simpleton’s perspective. They lost on a last-second score. That’s pretty good considering the circumstances.

Also, Sark led them to great things the next couple of years. (Including the 2017 national championship)
