Wore coat and tie and large black shoes and no socks. Is this a new fashion or is he making a hidden statement? Looked tacky to me but I'm just an old man.

I think its just a bit "young" for you. He was trendy, with look that was consistent with modern show biz. Not an everyday look, but I thought he pulled it off nicely. It was a tuxedo (classic look), which was red velvet (trendy). The particular shoes where low cut loafers which are worn quite often without socks.
