He has poor coaching at Michigan which doesn't help. They've mostly been a defensive school in recent years.

Smart coaches are going to pay transfers who they know are good instead of high school players. Especially at QB.

it’s the stupidity of NIL and high school recruiting. it’s not really worth paying insanely high price tag for an unknown player for multiple years… better to find a known player from another school and pay for one or two years of production after they’ve proven themselves at the D1 level and another school was able to get them up to speed nutritionally and in the weight room and let them make early year mistakes.
in NIL transfer portal era, fanbases already don’t have patience … but the pressure on a freshman and sophomores getting paid insane amounts of money just puts them in an even tougher spot.
Underwood could be in an absolute stud in two years, but is it worth it for Michigan to allow him to waste three seasons at $15M per year just to get to his potential? And will Underwood be mentally strong enough to handle the pressure during these three years from a fanbase who is angry at every mistake/bad game?

I know it can be biased for us to talk about him, but I have not been impressed with him at all.

For what it's worth, I am listening to Joel Klatt. He says Underwood has not made any progress and has regressed. Film looks really bad, says film is "incredibly hard to watch". He wonders how long Michigan can stick with him. I know this one is in the past and I know this one really pissed us off, but we may have dodged one here.
He then stupidly decided to stay in that situation instead of trying to come to LSU in the portal on a "cheap" deal. He could have backed up Leavitt, and learned under Kiffin/Weis, and been the starter going into 2027.
Regardless of what people say, physically gifted elite QBs don't just become beasts on their own. They are developed.

remember reading recruiting articles on BU and saying how elite he was at 7 on 7 tournaments and how quickly he processed the information. They were talking about how even though his physical tools were incredible, his mental game was even better.
Maybe Kelon Russel at bama was the better prospect after all.

Whittingham may not be the right coach for him.
I personally believe Lane is the coach that could get Underwood to where he needs to be but he chose his path.

Chambliss started one year in DIII and only got the starting job at Ole Miss when Simmons got hurt. The gamble paid off, but taking him was a huge gamble, at least as much as taking a chance on a HS kid.
He saw the tape of a senior QB who won a championship and thought it works for his offense. Remember Chambliss was a 5th year guy who played multiple years prior.

I think underwood is one of those guys that stood out in high school because he was bigger than everyone but then got paid and started to coast.

The guy completed 9 passes - 6 to one receiver. I didn't see the game, but those stats alone tell me he is a primary receiver only QB who can't go through his progressions.
He's a multimillionaire though, so all's good in the hood.
