"peace" (real "meaning" behind the swastika), but yea i get what you're saying

I do not believe that the KKK hates Nazis because they are associated with Neo-Nazism and they do the same salute.

The most ridiculous part about the whole confederate flag issue is that we venerate one of the worst mistakes in history.

The South was wrong to secede, and it was wrong to preserve slavery too. We lost. Time to move on.

As for the KKK....if I am in charge of that campus, there is no way in hell they get permission to march.

This thing could get nasty with people drinking, I wouldn't be suprised if one of these klansmen have a weapon. They better have an A$$load of police there.

The swastika was for centuries & still is considered a an emblem of good luck in the Far East. It isn't unusual to see 1 displayed in a Buddhist temple. You think Buddhists=Nazis?

What is a shame is that Ole Miss is allowing this. I know the KKK has the right to assemble and protest, but lets imagine the ramifications if Ole Miss was to say no. The KKK would probably sue the school, but with how much a school the size of Ole Miss, I'm sure they would not mind paying a fine. I mean, what else could they do? Close the school down? No. And lets say they lose their white supremacist fanbase. Who Cares? I am sure everyone in America (including Ole Miss fans) would like to see someone to stand up to this.

If Ole Miss did say no, they could have the Klansmen arrested if they protest without permission. I have been to D.C. during unscheduled protest. They can arrest people for disturbing the peace and meeting on private grounds (kind of like trespassing but not really since it is an open campus). They could also see this as providing clear and present danger because some of us can realistically see something happening like a fight.

I would rather see Ole Miss say no to a hate group then say "we love the First Amendment THIS much"

Slavery was probably the 3rd or 4th most pressing cause of the Civil War.

There are far more devastating things in history than the South fighting the North (ie Holocaust, 20+ million Russians dying in WWI. Stalin.).

If you mean the country's history, I agree it was bad. I wouldn't call it a mistake. Northern aggression had to be confronted and would have been confronted sooner or later. Slavery is the issue simple minded PC followers pin the war on, but the war was fought for much bigger reasons than that.

Most of the Yankees didn't even want the blacks after the war.

+1

You can tell who actually knows history on this board when the Civil War comes up.

No one can deny that slavery was a bad thing. It was. But the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. As a matter of fact, throughout the war, the North had slaves. The war was essentially about Abraham Lincoln and some of the changes he wanted to make. During the run for president, Lincoln said he did not believe freedom and rights for slaves was "unnecessary" and used the quote we are all familiar with "[slavery] is a necessary evil". After Antietam, a huge "victory" for the north, Lincoln released the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that the states in the south must free all slaves (not border states or states in the north). After the civil war, Lincoln still had hundreds of slaves that he did not free. People believe the Civil War was about slavery when the Emancipation Proclamation was made in 1863, 2 years after the war started.

Agreed. Most people in general are ignorant as hell but claim to know everything and look/stupid in the process. Take most of the people on this board as proof. Why does everyone get so angry when Southerners fly their flag or even when the Klan marches but black hate groups and race riot leaders are worshipped for doing their part to help "civil rights"? Treat them equally because they are the exact same.

I wonder how much Ole Miss's embracing of their "heritage" has hurt them on the football field over the years. Seems like somebody would have done a thesis or something on that over the years.

I know that Ole Miss hasn't won even an SEC title since '63. But i think they started integrating black players onto their team in the early 70's, roughly the time other SEC school like LSU did. I think Bama was the first SEC team to do so in like 70-71 after getting clocked by USC who had Sam Cunningham. (hard to imagine that when I was about 10 years old SEC football teams were still white only). Bama then went on to thourougly dominate the SEC in the 70's.

I don't know about the extent that Ole Miss integrated their team at first though. And I'd guess the whold "Colonel Reb" and the rebel flag, etc. must've had some effect on recruiting over the years. It'd be interesting to see some type of study or examination of this though.
