Hadn't heard this before.

Worth watching brief clip about Lane's path to coaching.

Reminds me just a little bit about Terry Bradshaw. Phil Robinson handed the QB job to him because Phil would rather duck hunt then play football.

In no world was Robertson a better QB than Bradshaw. Hell, Bradshaw would have started as a freshman if it had been legal.

Robertson was the starting QB at tech. Bradshaw has QB 2. Then Phil saw ducks flying over during practice and quit. Then Bradshaw became the starter.

Couple of years later, Phil was contacted by a NFL team seeing if he would try out. He said Iam good were Iam at.

Phil Robertson started as the quarterback ahead of Terry Bradshaw at Louisiana Tech University in the mid-1960s, meaning Bradshaw was his backup for two seasons.

There were three QBs that played for Woodlawn HS in Shreveport. Joe Ferguson, Terry Bradshaw, and Trey Prather. The first two played in the NFL. Prather went to LSU for one year before joining the Marines and died in Vietnam.

I talked to some of the Old timers that went to Woodlawn back then. They said Prather was better than both of them.

You understand Robertson was older than Bradshaw and freshmen couldn’t play back then?

From Coach EJ Lewis….

Robertson knew he wasn’t the QB Bradshaw was and he actually left school. Just quit. Coach AL told me, EJ, we gotta have Robertson back. If something happens, we need that depth.

So on a July day I loaded up and drove over to the little trailer Phil and Kay were living in. It was raining cats and dogs and when Robertson answered the door, he was wearing waders rolled down to his waist and there was a small deer in a large metal tub that appeared freshly killed.

I spent about 30 minutes with him and in the end convinced him to come back.

Don’t believe all the stories you read.

Robertson was a fine QB

Bradshaw was the number one HS recruit in the nation and signed with LSU but didn’t have the grades to go to school there.

Robertson was a fine QB

Bradshaw was a NFL HOF’er.

I was just going by Phil's book. The things I said about the QBs at Woodlawn is from many conversations with the old timers. I knew Randy Mason. He was Terry Bradshaw's roommate at Tech. Many colorful stories that went on but out of respect, sadly they will stay unsaid. Except one. From what I remember, somehow Terry got the ball stuck in his helmet. Think he scored a touchdown. But it has been thirty years and I had a couple of drinks. Randy owned a bar that I played pool out of. Hell of a guy.
