However, with every kickoff return, there is not only a chance that they exceed the 25 yard line, but house it.

There have been only 2 return TDs in the SEC out of 258 kickoffs. I'll take my chances.

Correct, we're arguing chances versus a sure thing every time. Like I said, I understand both sides.

Idon't mind how we are doing it now, but against Bama I think we should just try and kick it out of the end zone every time. Bama thrives on big momentum swinging plays, whether that's from special teams or defense (see how many non offensive tds they have scored this year). Our strategy will need to be to eliminate big plays or td's from their defense and special teams. Taking out kick returns as a whole with touchbacks is one big plus. We want to make Hurts beat us. This Bama team is a lot like our 2011 team. Big momentum plays from their special teams or defense takes a lot of pressure off of their QB which then results in them running away with the game.

Wondering how many were returned past the 25. How many return team fumbles?

Just curious.

There's also a risk that the opposing team turns the ball over

I'd imagine that's a much greater likelihood than housing one

Using that line of thinking, we should punt it out of bounds every time since there is a risk of giving up a TD.

Bama has no TDs on 17 kickoff returns. They do have 3 TDs on 20 punt returns.

Don't see those stats anywhere. I was looking for average starting field position or something along those lines.

Yep, I was looking also. Can't find definitive stats on it myself.

I absolutely agree that the best strategy is to kick it out the end zone and take away any possibility of a big return.

Mostly depends on the field position we are punting from. This is a totally different argument than kickoffs where they are guaranteed a certain field position every time it is a touchback.

I personally like watching Devin White going down the field and making tackles on kickoff.

As long as we don't kick it out of bounds either choice is ok. If we try and be cute, using the Miles/Peveto MO and instead of putting it in a corner we kick it out of bounds don't even try.. Kick it down the middle and hope for a 3 to -3 receiving spot. If we do that I like our chances of these all hood scenarios.

1. Getting a block in the back or holding call where the receiving team starts inside the 15.

2. Gets tackled between the 15-20.

3. Turns it over after a big hit.

Just PLEASE DONT BE CUTE AND TRY FOR A CORNER KICK THAT GOES OB.. Wait O is the coach. We don't do that anymore.
