What is it about Kevin Steele that caused him to fail at LSU and yet find success at Auburn?

Great question. The odd thing is, he was a highly regarded hire for LSU. I know people bashed him for giving up 70 points to West Virginia in a bowl game but aside from that people thought he was a good hire.

Talent, especially on DL. And probably more freedom to run his unit.

Didn’t exactly have the players for his 4-2-5 scheme plus he liked to run a bunch zone and that didn’t mesh well with Corey Raymond. I’m sure it would have gotten on track if he stayed more than a year.

nothing in his resume suggests that he will sustain an elite defense. espn fpi has auburn tagged for 2 more losses. guess who they predict auburn will lose to?

LSU’s defense gave up 19 or more points in the first 10 games for the first time EVER in Kevin Steele’s year here.

I actually think this may be the right answer, simple as that.

The guy has an elite DL. Coaching looks easy when you have monsters up front.

Although, is a five-loss campaign in 2018 success?
Giving up 30 points to Tennessee is success? 52 to Bama?

He wins on talent, not scheme. He’s a great recruiter, but our overall talent and depth levels were way down thanks to the end of Chavis’ reign and his BBQ buddy, Brick. If he had stayed and re-stocked the cupboard, he likely would have been fine here.

Steele took over for Muschamp at Auburn. Remember how Fournette made that defense look early in the season his last year? They were young, but had talent. By the end of the season, Muschamp had them playing a lot better and they held their own. The table was set a lot better for Steele there and to his credit, he’s kept it going.

He has a HUGE pension in the Alabama system. He already had years into it and needed more years to be qualified for a very large guaranteed pension. There was not that opportunity in the Louisiana system. Dude went where he would be taken care of after football and not have to work for it. Had to guarantee he would be there for a few years to get it. He went through the motions here apparently when he had a good idea Miles was on his way out.

Chavis left the defensive line a shell of its former self.

Auburn has an elite defensive line thus an elite defense.
