I saw him play several times as a kid. Still in my mind was the greatest player to ever play basketball. But, after I heard Dale Brown in his interview say that in today's game a player would have hit 15 three pointers every game to reach the 44+ average Pistol holds. So this brought me to this question. Has anyone watched all Pistol's games on film in college and if there was 3 point line when he played, added in those shots. I wonder what his average would have been ? I'm thinking at least 30% higher.. who knows. Probably in the 55 to 65 range per game ? Still my favorite player of all time.

What if Pistol Pete had a 3 point line

Read this article from a few years back. Doesn't answer your question but it's on topic.

It’s hard to even calculate, cause if there was a 3 point line then, he might not attempted a layup....Yes, though arguably the best player ever...

From an article I found on google: Article

quote:

No one put on a show quite like the Pistol. Under his father at LSU, Maravich wrecked havoc on the basketball court. Averaging 44 points for his career along with bringing flash and style to the game only seen on the streets of NYC at the time. Pete did this in an era with no three-point line and his freshman year didn't count towards his official average. Former LSU coach Dale Brown (who discovered Shaq) charted every Pistol LSU game and said if the three-pointers were counted, Maravich would have averaged a cartoony 57 ppg. His silhouette of floppy hair and floppy socks should be the NCAA logo

This is just unreasonable. Maravich averaged 11 FT made per game. That means 33 points came from the field -- 16.5 field goals made. To average 57 points, he would have had to make 12 3-pointers, 5 two pointers, and 11 FT.

Is it believable that he was making 2.5x as many 3-pointers as 2-pointers at a time when there was no benefit to shooting the longer shot?

Pete was before my time but was also known for having a lot of off-balance and improvised ways of scoring. If there had been a 3-point shot, maybe he would have never developed those skills as well.

Dominique Wilkins mentioned the above thoughts on today's players in a recent interview.

Brown said that according to what he charted, he averaged 13 3 pointers per game
