quote:
Violations- Basket Interference. (Rule 9-17.2.5). Basket interference occurs
when a player causes the basket or backboard to vibrate when the ball is on or
within the basket or the backboard and/or is on or in the cylinder.
Violations- Goaltending. (Rule 9-17.5). When the ball contacts the backboard
and any part of the ball is above the rim on a field goal attempt, it is considered to
be on its downward flight. In such case, it is goaltending when the ball is touched
by a player as long as it has a possibility of entering the basket.
Directly from the NCAA rulebook

No it wasn’t goaltending on LSU because goaltending can only be called on a defensive player. Offensive players can be called for basket interference but none of those conditions were met.
I'm super glad you pointed this out bc you're absolutely correct.
But here is the part that applies...

2? Touches the ball while any part of it is within the cylinder that has the ring as its lower base;

it has to be within the basket cylinder for it to be called offensive interference. Ball was above the rim going away from the cylinder when he touched it. Good call.

Not replying to you specifically...
Pretty funny that both sides say it’s “obviously and definitely” goaltending/interference or not. When I saw it live and replayed I thought it was goaltending, as I’ve always thought anything directly in the cylinder above the rim to the ceiling cannot be touched. I’m still pretty sure that’s right, but who knows. Like someone said, that’s usually called 99 out of 100 times.
So excited to watch this team and coaching staff. My kids are finally coming of age and watching the games with me. High fives all around even though we all have the flu. Reminds me of being a kid and watching the Chris Jackson and Shaq days with my old man. Great time to be a Tiger Fan. We’ll all be there in two weeks to watch the Tenn game flu or not.

I thought it was goaltending/ basket interference watching live but then I second guessed myself when Vitale and the other announcer agreed it was not goaltending. They kept using the phrase “off the cylinder”. This was after watching the replay several times.
