Johnson, Morrow, Williams First Team All SEC - Morrow Snubbed for POY!

The season awards were announced yesterday, for SEC women's basketball. Flau'je, Aneesah, and Mikaylah were all named to the first team. However, the POY was Madison Booker who averaged 16 pts and 7 rebs, while Morrow averaged 18 pts and 14 rebs. When they went head to head, Booker shot 3-17 and scored 15 pts (mostly on free throws), while Morrow had 15 pts and TWENTY REBOUNDS! I guess you win POY if your team comes in first place?

To the victor goes the spoils.

Well, you may say that but, last year LSU wasn't the champs and Angel was named POY, so...........................................................?

Was there a player on another SEC team that averaged MORE Points & Rebounds than Reece?

...Seriously? That's who they gave the award to? There is no world where that is even remotely justifiable, no matter what sort abstract, nonsense reason people try to come up with.
I didn't necessarily think it was automatic that Morrow would win it, because I don't really have much confidence in the people who vote on these things to get it right. But Booker never even entered my mind as a possibility.

League POY awards are given to a player from the champion of the league over a statistical leader year after year in leagues from HS to the pros. Not all the surprising to me. We don't blow a lead against Texas and then drop games against Bama and Ole Miss and maybe she wins the award. Bama and Ole Miss Morrow had insane numbers but it is overlooked because we lost. Winning matters.

There is a reason why I said there is "no" justifiable reason. Because I am well aware of the tendency to reward player of the year to the best player from the best team. But that only happens if the best player on the best team has at least some meaningful statistical advantage. Like when Reese lost the award to Boston from SC, because Boston was the defensive player of the year, and despite being way behind Reese in points and rebounds, they justified that by saying Boston played a lot less minutes, because her team was deeper. It was not the best of arguments, but they had at least something to go on.
This girl from Texas has no legitimate statistical argument. She didn't even make the all defensive team, while Morrow did. If it were automatic that the award goes to a conference champion, then the aforementioned Angel Reese would not have won it last year.

Not saying you're wrong, in fact you make a compelling argument. Just saying I'm not surprised. I think the voters recognized that this LSU squad is a three lady squad thus likely seeing their stats as inflated because they are relied on more. All three were first-team. Rarely does one team have 3 first teamers. So...long worded response to state that the "team was deeper" thus less stats needed argument that was used for Boston is being used here. Morrow had a 15 point 20 rebound effort against Texas and a 28 point 12 point effort against Ole Miss, both losses. Voters love to look at those insane games as empty stats because they ended in L's.

I don't think that Texas is really all that much deeper. We have three players who obviously stood out, but I don't think the bench production was all that much different from what Texas got. LSU just hit a rut late in the year, here, and Morrow has been hurt. And again, Boston was the defensive player of the year. Booker didn't even make the all defensive team.
I get that you and I agree that Booker shouldn't have won it, and we're not arguing about whether it was right. I just don't think that Booker meets any criteria to have even been considered for this award, otherwise, why did Reese win it last year? Why didn't they just give it to some SC player?

Booker was a no-brainer for SEC POY. Not a snub.

A candidate, since she's the leading scorer and rebounder on a team tied for the title, but not close to a no brainer

Texas sophomore Madison Booker expressed surprise that she was named the SEC Player of the Year on Tuesday. Booker said she would have voted for LSU's Aneesah Morrow.
That is very cool of her to say that.
