I think they were thinking "OMG, we can't stop the pass so let's keep them from making big plays down the field. Keep them on the field a LONG time by forcing them to dink and dunk, keep our offense on the field for long drives, all in an effort to limit the opportunities Joe has to put another nail in our coffin".

Which, of course, didn't work LOL! Give Joe enough time in the pocket and he'll tear you a new one - either by throwing to one of his receivers on a comeback route (assuming they haven't already burned their covers on their NORMAL routes), or (worst case) he turns into a fullback and goes and gets the first with his own two feet. Blitz him and he torches you with a throw to an outlet receiver, who will probably get 10+ yards RAC.

Seriously, and no arrogance intended, but DAMN is this team talented on the offensive side of the ball!

I live in KC, and I feel like I'm watching the chiefs from early last year: Who you gonna cover? Hill? Kelce? Watkins? Think you can do that AND prevent Mahomes Kareem Hunt from eat up yards on the run (before Kareem got cut, of course...).

They called it a "pick your poison" offense, and that's exactly what LSU has this year. Too many players playing at the very top of their game on the same side of the ball - I can't think of any college team with a similarly talented defense that has enough great players to shut down Burrow, Clyde, Moss, and the Three Amigos - at the same time! Maybe 'Bama last year? Maybe, but nobody this year.

OU looked at their crap sandwich of a defense and put the best turds they had on the table, praying for a miracle (it didn't happen - too bad God didn't favor them like he does Clempson...)

Joe Burrow-Joe Brady.

They did try some pressures and equally failed. They were just totally outmatched specially in the secondary.

to make it worse, how in the hell did they rush 3 and end up with single coverage on the outside?

Did someone hide?

Probably that death by a bunch of paper cuts was preferable to giving up a touchdown every time they tried to man up any of the receivers.

You know what was funny about this was that a couple of times they dropped a hundred guys into coverage, played quarters, and Burrow still hit Jefferson on a bomb.

They thought they were Auburn but didn’t take in account that they don’t have first rounders on their D line. Auburn can penetrate with a three man rush most schools can’t. I wonder if Alex Grinch was looking at film on LSU offense and was just like I’m fricked.

Just spoke with my buddy who is a high school coach. He said Clemson has the best D coordinator in college ball.
He thinks they are going to bring the house and hit Burrow early and often. Play their corners to the inside and take away the slants.
He did say that would leave the running back to beat a linebacker.
He said Burrow and the receivers are to good to give time to.

Re watched the highlights and I couldn't believe how many times OU stupidly rushed only 3.

I watched a film study a few weeks ago which highlighted Burrow's ability to beat blitz packages with the outlet and short slant receivers, and they guy was of the opinion that if Georgia had a chance, it would have to rush three, drop seven into coverage and keep a spy on Burrow.

Then Georgia did just that and Burrow took about 9 seconds on the play and hit a receiver in the end zone. Gary Danielson said right away, "you can't just rush three against Joe Burrow."

So there's the problem. Rush 4 or 5 and leave a receiver open. Rush 3 and get picked apart. Choose your poison.

it was even more dumb when you consider Clyde was out and we had newbie RBs in there trying to pick up blitzes.

Saban blitzed the hell out of him and Clyde went on a tear as a receiver. Teams have tried everything to no avail.

As an OU fan I’ve thought WTH watching our defense the last 10 years.

LSU players said they were slow with tight hips and they weren’t even joking.

They went out and proved it.

"Every time OU rushes 3, Justin Jefferson bumps his head on the goal post."

I wish I remember who wrote that.

With all due respect, your buddy has no idea what they’re going to try. That is a good guess, and it could be part of what they do, but when LSU stacks three receivers which corner takes away the slant?

They were giving the slot WRs 7 yards of cushion. Bad move.
