It isn't now, but Kelly's early classes left a void in the secondary, DL, and a first round talent at WR. As far as why we can't run block, I got no answer for that one.
The 22 class was just keeping the few recruits we had left in the boat. That’s the same for any new coach at any program today with the ESD being the day most players sign.
The 23 class had holes on defense, but that entire defensive staff also got wiped out for a reason. It wasn’t just the play on the field for the position coaches. They weren’t getting it done in recruiting, either. The current staff is, across the board.

Damn talk about nonsense. HS recruiting ain’t the problem right now
Evaluation of HS talent is 100% an issue if the guys we're recruiting on defense can't contribute for 3-4 years. Thats BS.

There is a true freshman starting on defense and five others playing rotation minutes right now.

Can you give me a number of individual in state schools he is only allowed to visit?
Recruiting rules are complicated. But looking at the D1 manual:
- There are basically three periods during which coaches are allowed to visit high schools: fall evaluation period (September-November), winter contact period (3 weeks in January), and spring contact period (6 weeks in April-May).
- During the fall evaluation period, the staff can visit schools but cannot make contact with the actual athletes. The staff is limited to one evaluation visit per high school, and 33 total evaluation days during the period.
- The contact periods are when the staff is allowed to visit recruits at their high schools/homes. The staff is limited to 140 total recruiting man-days (if two staff members make a visit it counts as two days).
- During each contact period, the staff is limited to a maximum of two visits per high school.
- If a staff member visits a high school during a contact period, it counts as a contact for all players at that school regardless of whether the coaches saw them.
- The head coach is only allowed to make 1 off-campus contact with each recruit (whether in-home or at high school) per year. (13.1.2.6.2)
- The head coach is not allowed to make visits to high schools or engage in any off-campus recruiting activities during the spring contact period. (13.1.2.6.3)
So basically, the head coach is only allowed to visit high schools during the fall evaluation period (which is during football season) and the 3-week winter contact period. But the head coach is only allowed one off-campus contact per recruit, so if he visits a high school during the winter contact period he loses the ability to do in-home visits with every player at that school (unless he does them the same day, I think).
During the spring contact period (when most off-campus recruiting occurs) the head coach is not allowed to participate in off-campus recruiting at all.

Maybe that's one of the reasons he's at the golf course, trying secure NIL from boosters

Kelly’s not involved in the details here
There was a time when he was out recruiting and doing the work but he’s not doing that anymore
He’s a good talker though

There is nothing to suggest we have misevaluated anyone in last years class. And if you think the difference in us and others is HS recruiting versus our abysmal portal efforts I don’t know what to say.

So why do I see videos of Kirby or Sark or Saban landing helicopters at high schools before games?
They do that 1 time a year and can't talk to the player

Can you provide a link which lays out how many high school visits a head coach is allowed?
1 in home visit per prospect

Are they good?
By true freshman standards? I would say so. Breaux is probably the standout from that group. Breaux, McKinley, and Reliford all need physical development, being DL players. Which is to be expected.
I haven’t paid a ton of attention to Keys but apparently the staff is really high on him. Again, hard position to play as a freshman.
Jury is still out on the freshman DBs IMO.

What I see are smaller , less athletic players compared to Alabama . They don’t look like the old time super speedy big guys . They are not coached on fundamentals , like gap discipline , or they physically get shoved out of their gap . Clock management and time out management is poor also .

I agree about the DL, I’m pretty hopeful on them. The rest are still TBD for me. Getting minimal playing time on a bad defense doesn’t do a ton for me that’s all

McBryde, Breaux, Dom, Keys, Woodland, and Reliford are all freshman contributors right now from last years class
Weeks, Womack, Stamps are starters from last years

Breaux has been starting.
Woodland, Spears, McKinley, Reliford and Keys (more recent) have all been getting snaps. Do you not watch? This isn’t exactly a mystery that they have all been playing.
Spears, Reliford, Woodland and Keys all recorded a tackle vs Bama, so we know they all played last week.

I expect O would do better than that

Breaux didn’t start last week, but he has absolutely started games this season.
